Singaporean's behaviours and attitudes are influenced by, among other things, his or her home language and his religion. Singaporeans who speak English as their native language tend to lean toward Western culture, while those who speak Chinese as their native language tend to lean toward Chinese culture and Confucianism. Malay-speaking Singaporeans tend to lean toward Malay culture, which itself is closely linked to Islamic culture

15% of Singapore population are Muslims, no US city has such a high percentage of Muslims living there.

Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil.
Buddhism is the dominate religion in Singapore.

75% are Chinese and that's not having a dominant culture?

Have you ever been to Singapore? I lived there. It was my base for offshore work when I was young, and I've been back several times, because it is a uniquely wonderful place, because of the amazing blend of cultures into what has become a true Singaporean culture.

The first unique quality it has is its official primary language (English) and its de facto version of it, Singlish. Singlish is English with borrowings from Chinese, Malay, Hindu, and Imperial English as spoken by the former overseers. There's a number of dishes created or perfected in Singapore that reflect blendings of the various cultures. If you have any shred of an adventurous spirit in you, you'd find the food courts that host hawker stands to be a culinary paradise. Sorry-la, no french fries though.

And in what would be horrendous to you, there's a lot of intercultural marriages.

The bottom line is, every culture is respected and allowed to flourish, but everyone is expected to at least tolerate (and pretty much everyone comes to appreciate) the cultures of their neighbors.

Does it sound like your idea of hell?

Furthermore, according to a recent survey, more than 90% of Singaporeans are comfortable with having people of other races and religions as neighbors or colleagues. In an interview for International Herald Tribune, Singapore’s founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, lectured the US on social cohesion and equality, attributing his country’s economic success to the racial harmony in the society.https://www.historycampus.org/2016/c...ticulturalism/

At least 80% of residents in Singapore live in public housing and according to Singapore law, all public housing buildings must have a mixture of nationalities. Ethnically segregated neighborhoods is illegal there.

The percentage of Muslims in Singapore is similar in numbers as the great cities of Paris and London, yet there has not been a major terrorist attack or threat there.

The Western World can learn a lot from Singapore.
They are all hard working Asians who value education. If you call that "multi- culturalism", you fail to understand what that means in America and it is not good.

I guess you don't realize the history of Singapore and that its success is owed to those nasty old colonials- the Brits.

If American liberals were in control, they would turn it into a slum in ten years with their own thoughts of "multi-culturalism".

I bet you really believe that there could be Singapore-like quality of life here in American if only there wasn't those darn white people standing in the way.

55 years ago, when Singapore gained independence from Britain, the country was a poverty- stricken place with few natural resources, warring ethnic and religious groups, a mostly uneducated population with a serious Opium addiction epidemic.

The country made the decision to invest in their human resources with a strong emphasis on education and teaching, harsh consequences for illegal possession/ dealing in recreational drugs and respecting diversity.

Education became compulsory. The language of teaching is English. Teaching is a relatively high paid profession with substantial social prestige. Doing well in school became a matter of family and community pride.

Families may choose to home school or religious school so long as the children perform at the high standards of public education.

Given the strong cultural emphasis on educational achievement, 80% of students are privately tutored beginning in preschool. Families sacrifice to provide their children with every educational opportunity to do well.

Singapore has come a long, long way since gaining independence.

Despite this, poverty does exist. Single mothers are especially at risk working multiple low wage retail and food service jobs 7 days a week is a way of life. Most are immigrants, especially from Indonesia. Family housing may be a single room, despite the number of children. A grandparent usually watches the children or an older child is put in charge.

Ok. Has the OP ever visited Singapore?

I have and I do at least twice a year. I love it there, although it is expensive.

The left would never settle for how Singapore does things. You litter, vandalize private property, you spit on the side walk, you will get punished and they dont give a damn what your excuse is. You will get caned and you will be publicly shamed.

Smuggle, sell, or get caught with narcotics and you get to die for it.

I love Singapore. Clean and green and safe. Just dont be a scum bag and litter, or feel its ok to steal.

Most Liberals wouldn't last a month there. They dont cuddle their criminals, make excuses for them to offer free passes because daddy was a Dick head.

One needs to look at the Singapore that existed under British colonial rule and what the country has achieved since its independence, 55 years ago.

The population under colonial rule was largely uneducated. Ethnic gangs and violence were rampant. Religious differences were not respected. Opium addiction was an epidemic.

The ruling class did well. Not so much for the majority.

100% agree.

So much for the idea that former colonies can't succeed due to colonial oppression. LOL
