Not even Trump would do that. He may brag he knows more than the Generals and not work well with his NSC team etc. But this is about being in over his head when dealing with an admittedly difficult situation.

If it turns out Turkey made a Russia-brokered plan with Assad, then I can't believe Trump had a clue nor even US intelligence. Assad may, on his own initiative, be taking advantage of Trump's long stated desire for a total U.S. pullout. Or perhaps the David Ignatius reports are wrong.

Make no mistake though. This is not going to play as abandoning the Kurds but outright betraying them. The WH announcement said the Turkey incursion was "long planned." That's double-speak for long threatened. With Trump caving. Right after the Pentagon - with a US guarantee of safety - had the Kurds pull back from their defensive lines.

AP Beirut - Ankara and Washington agreed in August to carry out the joint patrols and remove Syrian Kurdish fighters from the borders. But they still disagree on the size of the area along the Syria-Turkey border and who is to monitor it.

Erdogan said on Sunday ... screw the Agreement. Trump said fine. That's not a leak: The White House released the bloody announcement right afterwards. Both the Pentagon and NSC were reportedly blindsided.

Trump now appears to be backpedaling with threatening tweets to Turkey ... let's see how that goes. And whether Assad does push north. And what happens with ISIS.

We haven't been in Syria for 20 years and we only have 1000 troops in a support function, is that a big deal. This really sounds like Erdogan telling Trump to get our troops out of the way because he's going after the Kurds. No one outside of the White House knew this was coming so not a lot of thought went into it.

If Trump wants to do something significant get us out of Afghanistan or South Korea, this is small game. You can bet the Afghan government forces are taking note of our actions.

US troops in Syria are not involved much other than "being in the way" of a Turkish invasion and massacre of Kurds. It's kind of like Europe that way, where the Russians can't attack Poland without involving the US because of NATO. Trump has agreed to take the troops out of the way so the Turks can get on with their genocide.

The US has limited troop deployments in dozens and dozens of countries around the globe for peace-keeping, training, drug interdiction and who knows what else. Why it was so important to remove this small presence, especially when it will mean the death of thousands of Kurds and the likely release of 10,000 ISIS fighters and another 50,000 family members is a mystery with only a couple explanations: one involving Putin and the other the total incompetence of Trump as president.

Its betrayal for sure, and that is how the Kurds call it. Trump also knows there are lot of Christians in the area who will also be slaughtered. Little does he care.

Why the sudden surrender? Why not arrange for UN peacekeepers take over before leaving when ready?

Of course, Trump does seems to have a special love for dictators like Erdogan..
Ah, but if Erdogan gets the Kurds, then perhaps in return he lays off his very vocal opposition to the use of Trump's name on the Trump Towers in Istanbul.

Surely a boon for all Americans.

Alot of non-muslim minorities also sought protection from ISIS and moved to that region of Syria. They will now be under extreme threat once again.

And here is why Trump is letting 10,000 people be slaughtered:

“I have a little conflict of interest because I have a major, major building in Istanbul,” Trump said in 2015. “It’s a tremendously successful job. It’s called Trump Towers — two towers, instead of one, not the usual one, it’s two,” Trump said in an interview with Stephen Bannon, then chairman of Breitbart News.

ISIS sleeper cells have attacked the ISIS imprisonment camps after Kurdish guards left for the border to fight the Turks.
