Take note: The emergency is because trump is Putin's *****.

Turkey may be in the strongest bargaining position with Putin at the upcoming Sochi summit. Assad still needs Russian aid to deal with the remaining Syrian rebels not to mention the costs of reconstruction. He may well not be in any position to object too strongly to that Kurdish slice of Syria that Putin will put under Turkish control. That, of course, Putin will attribute to American perfidy since Trump's rubber-stamped it with this agreement.

Assad is still ahead since with the U.S. withdrawal he can now control the remaining agricultural areas & oil will be a plus.

Trump gets out from having to sanction Turkey because it agreed to stop their invasion of Syria - which appears to mean no longer having to fight for territory that they will get in the end anyway. Many Kurds along the border no doubt will flee south.

So it looks like everybody wins - Trump, Putin, and Assad, just not the Kurds even though Trump says they are very "happy."

What am I missing here?

Turkey is our true ally and the Turks now consider the Kurds to be terrorists.

There may have been better ways to separate ourselves from this centuries old conflict, but none of us opining on this forum really know anything about the situation, do we?
You are exactly correct which is why so many hate Americans. Not even so much American actions for it is clear that other nations also are noted back-stabbers. Rather, it's the pairing of the American myth of exceptionalism with that stabbing. The sheer hypocrisy of it.

The Kurds were an ally and now they are discarded. Most administrations have the sense to hide it better. For example, they allow a decent period of time (like two years in Vietnam) before the funeral.

That this was so blatant creates the current political problem for Trump - not to mention world opinion.

Exactly, and he is celebrating.

Welcome to looney land.

"This is a great day for civilization," Trump declared in a tweet following a press conference where Pence and Pompeo discussed the deal. "I am proud of the United States for sticking by me in following a necessary, but somewhat unconventional, path. People have been trying to make this 'Deal' for many years. Millions of lives will be saved. Congratulations to ALL!"

I understand that the word ceasefire is not in the document Pence and Pompeo have on the plane they are coming back on.

Press Sec. on plane has briefed the press and said it may not be a real ceasefire or not use the word.

Just crazy.

He is not solving anything. He, along with Erdogan, gave the Kurds five days to get out of the homeland they have lived in an raised their families in for generations or die. That is a Trump ceasefire.

Insignificant? Lol then why the uproar. The ceasefire is a positive also. Why can’t you just be happy we have 50 less soldiers in a war zone. Syria is joining the Kurds to defend their own country, without US troops, it’s a good thing.

Oh--they can stay...if they hand over their weapons. Erdogan wins. He gets what he wants. Trump surrendered, allowing Erdogan to drive the Kurds out of their homeland or die. Trump has made the USA weak and disdained by the rest of the world.

I'm sure all the NRA members on the forum would think it is just fine to have to either hand over their guns or get off of the land they have lived on for centuries. Right?

Trump and Pence Negotiate a Turkey Syria Cease Fire
pull-EEZ!

1) tRump gives Turkey the green light to invade

2) Turks blast the Kurds and push them out of the "20 mile buffer zone" Erdogan wants.

3) Once Turkey (and Syria, meaning Putin) get what they want, Pence goes to Ankara to announce a "cease fire."

4) tRump claims he's a brilliant peacemaker.

5) Trumplings cheer.

It's his usual formula: create a crisis, then claim victory.

Lather, rinse repeat.

The Pence document made mention of civilian protection. I doubt that anyone associated with the defense could stay - weapons or not. Or if they did, they would disappear quickly into some unmarked grave and per the wording that might be just fine and dandy.
