Yes, you can. Once again, the Senate has sole power to detemine how it conducts it's trials. It doesn't have to parallel the judicial court system. You're making the mistake of trying to draw a parallel to a judicial court trial.
Besides, both parties are amply represented in the Senate. The Dem minority leader can do it.

Like the guy who hit a grand slam to win the world series but never made it around the bases because he was mobbed at second base didn't REALLY hit a grand slam. Everyone knows he hit a grand slam.

I heard an interview with Ross Garber, who teaches impeachment law at Tulane.
He said that the Senate is in ultimate control at this point, and that that is backed up by the 1993 SCOTUS decision Nixon v. United States (Judge Walter Nixon, not Richard Nixon). He said that Nancy can only do this right now because current Senate rules don't demand a 'delivery date' from Nancy, but that the Senate can change those rules and require a 'delivery date'.
