Reagan made bloated military budgets, discrimination against races and gays acceptable, religious right wing fondling and massive deficit spending acceptable.
Reagan had to rebuild the military after Jimmy Carter's neglect. Your other comments are hideous.
I didn't vote in the poll because I'm not certain what I would do. In real life, I sat that election out. Voted for Reagan in '84 and regretted it by '86.
The facts are these....Carter was not as bad as he is typically portrayed today and Reagan was not as good as typically portrayed.

Reagan's vaunted military buildup actually started under Carter. Also, there is no denying Reagan's penchant for deficit spending. The highest deficit under Carter was $74 billion in 1980. Deficits ballooned every year under Reagan, reaching $212 billion in 1986. Apart from that, Reagan didn't actually DO much during his two terms, but he was a great cheerleader for the United States, and that is precisely what we needed at the time, someone to instill a spirit of optimism and pride in America.
Folks, the Constitution does not give the president authority to appropriate a plumb nickel.
If I recall correctly, President Reagan executed the office of president with a so-called democrat majority in both houses of Congress the entire time (maybe a two-year period with a slight so-called republican majority in the Senate?).
As one poster mentioned, his greatest contribution was morale booster after a period of depression.
As for actual legislation, most notable was the tax reform act of 1986.
The results of the end of the Cold War have been a mixed bag.
As for the rest, rhetoric and actual policy, utterly forgettable.
What shines forever are his Thomas Jefferson and Soviet Union jokes. Still funny, pleasurable, life-extending belly laughter.
He is a GOP candidate I would support. I always say, that one start in terms of getting the Black vote, is to admit that the Southern Strategy was a big mistake. Dole admitted that. He, unlike Reagan, supported the civil rights bills. I could get behind a Robert Dole, but not Reagan.
I was just curious about his appeal to you. I would have supported him too in 1996. I like his desire to abolish the Department of Education and his opposition standardized tests and to media censorship. Clinton deserved to loose for his demonization of teenagers and Dole’s 1996 campaign was the closest we’ve ever gotten to a “small government” President.
