This is not about abandoning conservatism but rescuing the GOP. I don't see this as the same thing as the Reagan Democrats. This Lincoln Project group has provided a safe harbor for disaffected Republicans who are not close to joining the Democrats but hate Trump and Trumpism more. So much that they will openly and courageously support his challenger to get him out of power. The GOP leadership became ineffective or else collaborators. There was no real effort to defend against the hostile takeover. Early on, there were repeated stories that Trump was "pivoting" and would be a real president. That never happened. The "never Trumpers" got suckered in or were marginalized as RINOs. The common excuse is that they wanted to "give the guy a shot". That didn't work either. So the next step was to oppose his reelection. There is drama ahead. This is the secession that will lead to the GOP's civil war.
