In 2001, USPS awarded a $48 million contract for 84 sorting machines to be installed. That's $570,000 apiece. Today that probably is close to three-quarters of a million apiece.
Louis DeJoy has plans to get rid of 502 sorting machines, which handle up to 36,000 pieces of mail per hour each. The alternative is to sort the mail by hand.
