Do you imagine that it's a conscious choice to **** you off? These are people with a 5th grade education in Spanish who are busy picking your lettuce 10 hours a day. Their kids are fluent without exception. I applaud the ones who can do it, and they are guaranteed a better life salary wise at least but that doesn't take away my respect for the ones who came here so their kids could have a better life at their own expense.

They are pretty similar but are ultimately different indeed. As that poster mentioned, they also use different words and phrases in the UK than in the US. An elevator in the US is called a lift there. US car trunk = boot. US car hood = bonnet. US apartment = flat. US sweater = jumper. US truck = lorry. US diaper = nappy. Etc. Lots of things like that, where you would need to know the British English language to be best understood there.

It's similar to how Brazilian Portuguese is different than the kind in Portugal. Time, culture, distance, etc. led to these different versions evolving.

So, I'm assuming nobody has a response to this question.

There are a good number of people in this country that speak Spanish as their primary language but that doesn't change the fact that the majority of people in this country speak English and always have. Therefore, English should be our official language. Most who do speak Spanish as their primary language can also speak English so what's the problem?

Pretty similar!!! Lol you're kidding right!? Trunk, good, apartment, sweater, truck are ALL English words (English English), a truck is a small lorry here that's all, I wear sweaters and jumpers (sweater is a type of jumper) and you can live in a flat or apartment. There are more differences between the way the Scots speak English and the English speak it but you never hear the term 'Scottish English'. It's the same language! Or am I seriously supposed to think I can speak multiple languages because I can speak English, American, Australian,. New Zealandish, South African, Canadian, Irish (well Irish English anyway), Scottish, Welsh (well Welsh English anyway)
etc :-D?

Ah, I didn't know those worked there too, so to speak. Knew there were differences. Hmmm more like dialects, yeah. But I think you could say you knew all of those if you did know the specific dialects

Ah I only just noticed you are in SE UK -(We lived in Sittingbourne before moving to London) - Its funny because MOST British people I know will make a HUGE deal about how THEY speak 'English' ... whereas AMERICANS do not. LOL
And.. to answer your question.. yes... New Zealand English is very different than American or British - as is Canadian etc etc etc

I strongly believe that English should be the official language of the U.S. it should be passed by law.
