I'm fine waiting until 65 but with DH retiring and having to pick up my own insurance for 18 months - sure go for it!

I had the same issue. I was automatically enrolled in Part A at 65, but I kept my family coverage at work so as to protect my wife. When I lost my job I could start Part B with no problem, but my wife lost coverage at the same time, so we had to go the the healthcare marketplace (Obamacare) for her. She spent months without coverage until open enrollment.

It looks like the Republican lawsuit to kill the ACA will be ruled on shortly after the election by the Supreme Court. My wife could lose her coverage immediately. Our situation is not unique, there are many like us.

Lowering the Medicare enrollment age does two very large and nice things.

It first of course gives many more of us the benefits of Medicare. Cheaper and easier portability state to state.

And second it relieves the private sector of a large part of its risks. So premiums there should drop significantly for the remainder.

So let people under 65 buy into Medicare and pay a premium.

The GOP has shown that they don't care about deficits since Trump took office, in fact, they support another $2 trillion stimulus right before the election. And they know the 60+ age bracket tends to be reliable voters. Does that figure into the calculation?

We also know that most Medicare recipients have not paid for the benefits they receive. They depend on current workers paying into the system.

"Few seniors have actually paid for their Medicare benefits. According to an Urban Institute estimate, the typical retired couple paid $122,000 in lifetime Medicare taxes but can expect to receive benefits worth $387,000.

Does that matter to voters?
Is that including the interest on that money they paid in?

Sure, just as with Medicare now.
But we also need to let them buy a supplement, because now you can't do that before age 65.

Raising the Medicare age means you enroll sicker and more expensive patients!
