All ties in together but since you want to rewrite history that story will never be told.

Slavery was a worldwide institution that all people suffered from at times. Why is it all white people’s fault? They were just people. Thank God the institution was abolished.

This is about the Confederates and their cause. The Confederates wanted to keep slavery. For that reason, Confederate generals do not deserve to be honored. The reason the Confederates wanted secession has little bearing on African tribes capturing people in other tribes. It still does not negate what the Confederate cause was.

By the way, the UDC rewrote history through textbooks and Confederate monuments.

But we're talking about what happened in the USA. Stick to that, or start your own thread. This thread is about Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy, not the rest of the world. Quit bringing red herrings into this.

Slavery was only one reason for the war. Economics, trade and constitution issues were major issues that help stem the war. But people like you only focus on the one issue.

Economic reasons were prevalent in the rise of the Nazis too, but weirdly, people tend to focus on the genocidal bits.

It was the biggest focus. Economics was tied to slavery. While there were certainly some trade issues, slavery was among the biggest issues. And it was the cornerstone that the CSA was to be founded on: slavery and Black inferiority/White superiority. Alexander H. Stephens said this himself. Cornerstone Speech.

Only one in five people in the south owned slaves. So do you really think that men put their lives on the line for rich people with whom they had little in common? Given the differences in economics, East TN was staunchly Union. The first abolishionist paper in the US was in Jonesboro, TN. MANY East TN Unionists were rounded up and hung by Confederate forces for supporting the war. East TN sent 40,000 troops for the Union; in recognition of the regional support, Lincoln College was established in East TN near the Cumberland Gap.

BOTH in the north and south, soldiers were fighting for their STATES. Read the personal accounts of soldiers and you are reminded of this time and time again. Commanders would remind the regiments that they were soldiers from ______ (name the state) and that was where their loyalty was placed.

The concept of Federalism is a notion that became ingrained AFTER the war.

Regarding the statues- If they are preserved and put in a separate sculpture park or at a battlefield site, I would support that. It is the PRESERVATION OF HISTORY that is important. If they don't have the statues on "2nd place avenue", that is fine. Just don't destroy art or history.

Cold Harbor battlefield (not far away) is essentially devoid of any statues or markers. That would be a great place, as the last time I was there, there was a small plexiglass pedestal marking the battlefield and little else.

I am NOT a modern Confederate supporter; we had MANY ancestors who fought and died in the Civil War, all for the Union. We have ancestors who were the first settlers, dating back to Robert Warren who signed the Mayflower Compact. Our kin have fought in every war for the US, even before there was a US. Lots of kin fighting in the King Phillip War, Revolution (for the US- no traitors at all, which is unusual), War of 1812, Mexican American War, Civil War, Indian Wars, ect………………………. No confederates in the attic.

That's literally every war, politicians put people with no power on the ground to fight their battles.

I say build a new wing at Tredagar and call it Relics of the Lost Cause, this way the museum can provide proper interpretation of what they represented.
