#1. So long as a new national anthem-ish poem doesn't replace the old one, I don't have a problem with that, necessarily.
#2. Whatever that song is, I don't think it should have the phrase We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, in it like "Lift Every Voice and Sing" does.
I don't know how skilled he is at being a representative of the people and politician...but I do think Mr. Clyburn needs to learn something called tact.
It's not a bad poem/song whatever. It's rather moving...but when I envision some group of children reciting it in a gymnasium or something, that seems quite disturbing to me, especially this stanza:
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the day that hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet,
Come to the place on witch our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our star is cast.
So...imagine a group of eight year olds in music class reciting a poem about dying hope, and people being beaten and marching through piles of blood.
There is only ONE national anthem and that is "The Star Spangled Banner". There is no "black" national anthem, never was and never will be. If you are so offended by the real one then get out of here.
You all want us divided? Have your stupid black national anthem. Go ahead, keep dividing us more. I personally have never heard of this song, heard it or ever care to here it. You want to listen to it, go ahead but it is not and will not ever be our national anthem.
BTW, if you all think that is the black one then I'll call the Star Spangled Banner the white one. There I said it!
Morons!!!!!
Not the national anthem. A national hymn. You know the songs you sing at church.

Y'all are squeamish. French schoolkids sing about the impure blood watering their fields. Danish schoolkids celebrate the king bashing in Swedish brains.
I have no problem with this. The lyrics seem generally positive. It's not like were taking the song "WAP" and making it an anthem. Now that would be trashy. The national anthem we know of now was not official until 1931. I find it interesting that our anthem is related to an English drinking song. I didn't know this until today. Thanks city-data, and wikipedia.
"On November 3, 1929, Robert Ripley drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon saying "Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem."[3] Despite the widespread belief that "The Star-Spangled Banner", with its lyrics by Francis Scott Key set to the music of the English drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven", was the United States national anthem, Congress had never officially made it so. In 1931, John Philip Sousa published his opinion in favor of giving the song official status, stating that "it is the spirit of the music that inspires" as much as it is Key's "soul-stirring" words. By a law signed on March 3, 1931, by PresidentHerbert Hoover, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was adopted as the national anthem of the United States."
