Trump might be in for a bigly surprise.
Parler took anything illegal down such as threats and it was overseen by the UK The Office of Communications, commonly known as Ofcom.

Twitter was already being scrutinised by Governments across the world however the UK Government has already stated that this raises very important questions, and means that the social media platforms are taking editorial decisions. Furthermore according to the UK Government minister it raises questions about their editorial judgments and the way that they’re regulated.

If Twitter are going to take editorial judgments then they will have to be subject to far harsher regulations and oversight.

The UK was already looking at more stringent regulations however these may have to be reviewed further, whilst other countries will be taking note o the measures the UK is introducing.

It's not in Jack Dorsey or Jeff Bezos remit to take such editorial decisions as they are a platform and not an editorial publisher, and that is the Office for Communications role, an independent regulatory and competition authority.

However if they want to be treated as publisher with editorial rights then they will have massive new responsibilities including impartiality, as the only duty they have to take down posts is in relation to those that are illegal as prescribed by the law, and not those based on opinion.

The High Court in London further clarified the situation in relation to the recent case of Scottow -v- CPS (Dec 2020), which involved insults on twitter, with the Court ruling that freedom of speech includes the ‘right to offend’.

Firms that fail to meet the obligations may face multimillion-pound fines or be blocked from operating in Britain, according to the report.

The newspaper cited a source as saying that the British government was concerned that social media companies were removing legitimate content on grounds that it was controversial rather than because it was harmful or inaccurate.

Criticism of Trump was always allowed.

Sorry to burst your bubble.
A very high profile individual by the name of Lin Wood posted his call to murder VP Pence on Jan 6. It took two days before the Parler team agreed to remove the content. Their moderation team has always made poor choices and businesses have every right to distance themselves from their irresponsible behavior.

These pearl-clutching posts denouncing hypocrisy are just too silly.

It is back on being hosted on a site run by two Russian men that also hosts mass murderers and extremists as well as some Russian government content. Fitting, no?

Parler's business model of no deleting posts, etc, does seem attractive to many but over time and in practice, no real controls on what is posted and how is posted and it becomes a great place for trolls and the worst of the internet.

Lots of folks from the right who jumped on board, jumped on and then found out what that meant. I had friends leave as quickly as they joined.

There will be as many anti-Trump, extreme leftists as there will be conservatives and that creates chaso.

It will be fun for many.

For many, it will not work.

Exactly. My first reaction to the Parler takedown was that it was wrong as I'm a strong supporter of free speech.

But then I saw the posts that led AWS to take them down, and I think they had every right to do what they did. They were direct calls for violence, not even the thinly veiled ones that go on here from certain people with a wink and a nod.

Parler founder John Matze met his now wife, Alina Mukhutdinova, in May 15, 2016 in Las Vegas. Alina is from Kazan, Russia. She was on a two week road trip “vacation” across the USA.

Parler LLC is owned by two member entities: John Matze and NDMASCENDANT LLC, a Delaware corporation, filed by Greenberg Traurig, LLP., Rudy Giuliani’s former firm. Still unclear who supplied the boatloads of money needed to launch this. But pretty clear Bongino doesn't have these kind of funds.

The first several thousand accounts on Parler were the usual Russia aligned operatives that have been tracked for years.

Parler is a large scale op aligned with Russian interests, and currently hosted on Russian servers.

So the social media service for American "patriots", is brought to you by Russia.

As Lisa Rowe says, "You can't buy this kind of irony."
