Of course it's not sustainable. But China will continue to loan the USA money to pay for it, while the nation gets weaker and weaker. This is their plan, and I think we all know how it will end, if we continue on this road to ruin.
Income taxes are a quaint relic of the early 1900s economy. In the Information Age, money grows on electrons and the purpose of income taxes is no longer government revenue, rather it's the mere reporting.
Nonetheless, your question is valid, even if couched in terms of deceptive meaning.
Thirty-nine percent can "support" the other 61% over a significant period of time at ever decreasing quality, e.g. junk food, junk education, junk entertainment, junk health care, junk "vaccines".
To be sure, in the long-run nothing is sustainable and we are all dead.
But history clearly shows that periods of stagnation can be long and drawn out, even over centuries.
With respect to andywire's comment, indeed, how long will it take the Chinese to eat alive all these junk people? In other words, an outside force can precipitate the collapse of a stagnant society, so it could be a matter of decades instead of centuries (e.g. Soviet Union lasted only 70 years, while the western Roman Empire around 400 and the eastern Roman Empire around 1,300).

Do you think it's fair that 39% pay for 100% of the tax revenues? Are you part of the 61% who pay nothing or the 39% who pay for everyone?
Please leave out discussion of all the other taxes. This thread refers only to federal income taxes.
Please also leave out your flat rate tax ideas. Those have been discussed ad nauseam.
And if you think the 39% aren't paying enough, how much should they pay?
Is this system sustainable? Are a percentage of the 39% going to stop working altogether?

Another way to look at this, is how many of those 61% who don't pay income tax are working at what we deem "essential" jobs, by pandemic standards?
They're working hard, full time, wrecking their knees and backs, for the profit of private business and still not making enough money to be comfortable.
How about, instead of us considering that "we" are supporting "them", "they" are supporting the capitalist system that leads to incredible wealth for those at the top of the chain, who have completely healthy knees and backs?
Grocery store stocking clerks, fast food workers, big box employees, who we all NEED, maybe need to be seen as the givers and not the takers?

Stop subsidizing low wage workers and make companies pay their workers a livable wage. Very few Americans will work a job if they cannot live on it, unless they are a teenager living with their parents or something.
Taco Bell is paying workers $14 hr around here. White Castle is paying $15/hr and up. If they can pay these wages, there is no reason we shouldn't expect grocery stores and such to pay the same or more.

They are getting paid for the job they are doing. All of use take wear and tear to our bodies and other things like relationships because of our jobs. That’s life. We work, wear out and die. Along the way hopefully we have done some good in the world and enjoyed some of our hard earned spoils.
You must fall into the “equality of outcome” camp. Which basically makes you a Marxist socialist. Sorry, burger flippers and shelve stockers should not make as much as doctors or other highly skilled professionals. If they want to make more, they can put in the work to do so.

Many of those “essential workers” are paying federal taxes unless they are leeches cranking out children that they cannot afford.
We’re talking about the deadbeats who invaded this country (or descendants of invaders), or all the losers who just spent the last year sitting at home playing xbox, or all the unemployed overweight bozos who wrecked their health and are now on “disability”.....
The deadbeat class is growing and it will be the end of this country.
I had to laugh the other day because I was sitting next to a young woman at a hair salon. She was talking about her future career as a nurse practitioner and I was asking about what that meant and how it was different from a regular nurse...just making conversation. She said she had another year until she got certified. Then she said she was taking time off because 'she was burnt out'. I had to laugh. If she is burnt out now, imagine when she gets a job in the real world. Mentioned she was 'living off savings' aka unemployment and extra benefits. Getting her hair done at a pricy salon...

I’d be careful about putting all immigrants in the lazy bucket. Many are hard workers. I think it’s actually many American citizens that the democrats have convinced should be given free stuff and make the same as educated and skilled people that always have their hand out to the taxpayers. I’m not defending illegal immigrants in the least. They should follow our laws. I’m just saying many are hard workers.

lol...what a stretch to make socialism sound great.
People get paid what the market determines they are worth.
