Wish he did not hit term limits. His successors were never nearly as solid at their jobs.
I don't have a party but I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jim Webb. Had he won the Democratic nomination in 2016, I likely would have voted for him over Trump.

I always admired Jim for confronting the war-mongering George W. Bush face to face.

Louisiana Senator John Breaux.
The last Democrat I voted for...long, long ago.

My point is that it wasn't rosy for everyone back then. Look at the riots of the 1960s.

Our state congressman the late Ike Skelton, even though he was a Democrat he was impartial where his constituents was concerned and did what was best for his district. He was actually the only Democrat I ever voted for. At times he did tow the party line, but not where it hurt those he represented.

I think you need to set a time limit, like within your lifetime or within the past 50 years.

I was very young but Eisenhower was a nice man, a Republican. As an adult I became a Democrat and I never liked any of the Republicans after Eisenhower although GW Bush (elder) wasn't too bad. That is within my lifetime.
Agree with this, as far as recent Republican Presidents. Eisenhower was unique in that he experienced WWII firsthand and understood exactly how horrific it was. He did everything in his power to prevent us from going down that path again, but now it is 60+ years later and most of the generation that remembers WWII are dead and gone. Like John McCain, who was more hawkish than Eisenhower but still a man of integrity.

As far as present day Republicans, I would have have to choose a couple of Buckeyes, John Kasich and Mike DeWine. Both well-educated and logical and neither bow to the political winds of the day.

The OP's question of course is not quite fair, since it assumes that everyone has "their party". When in reality many people have voted for both parties over the years. My last Republican Presidential vote was the first term of Reagan. After his election, in the 80's it became clear where the Republicans were headed, the populists and the hard-right opportunists were setting the stage even then for someone like Trump. They lost my trust and have never received a vote from me since.

I really liked Ann Richards, former governer of Texas. her politics weren't my politics, but i admired her for being a trailblazing feminist in the exclusive man's club of texas politics and her great sense of humor.

Rob Portman and Mike DeWine - I don't agree with them even 50% of the time, but I respect them.

Ron Paul. As a Libertarian I would have voted for him in the general election. He would have been a great POTUS.

Since I'm an independent I'll choose one from each party: Barry Goldwater and Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Who actually voted for someone outside of their registered party? I have at the local level, not for any federal representation.
