Nashville ex mayor, Tn ex Governor Phil Bredesen would be my pick.

I'd give him an A at both roles.

Objective, businessman background made for sound decision making process, w/o concern for the optics of the decision.

Wish he did not hit term limits. His successors were never nearly as solid at their jobs.

George Washington.

He designed the Presidency... and he mostly designed it to the Fed govt had only limited powers. Except for dealing with the Whiskey Rebellion.

He could have been another FDR, taking huge powers that weren't granted in the Constitution... but he didn't. He basically obeyed the Constitution instead.

He could have gone for a third term (and probably would have won)... but he didn't.

My kind of guy.

Eisenhower. Moderate, pragmatic, and sought peace.

Spencer Cox, Governor of Utah. He basically governs as a red state Democrat even though he is a Republican

I am a independent; so, Bob Michel, a moderate Republican from central Illinois and Paul Simon, a bow-tied Democrat from southern Illinois were my favorites.

How far back can we go? Everyone knows the parties weren't the same over the hundreds of years. I would say George Washington because they wanted to make him king but he said no. But that's not really a fair choice because Trump said he wanted to be king. GW would be an Independent but then along come other parties that we no longer even have.

I think you need to set a time limit, like within your lifetime or within the past 50 years.

I was very young but Eisenhower was a nice man, a Republican. As an adult I became a Democrat and I never liked any of the Republicans after Eisenhower although GW Bush (elder) wasn't too bad. That is within my lifetime.

I have no party, but I used to get a kick out of Trey Gowdy questioning people during Congressional hearings.
