He simply was not good enough to over come his stupidity. I don't like seeing people blackmailed into resigning their position but some people are stupid enough to get in that spot, they are likely stupid enough to play along...

Its a business making this decision. An employee of a business cannot just say whatever they want when part of their job is representing that business. Especially a high profile head coach. I am sure in his contract there is certain conduct he was required to uphold. Pushing the censorship and fascist card is silly.
Get a T-shirt made with all of Grudin's comments on them and wear it to work. See how that goes. You just cannot say or demonstrate anything you want anywhere you want and not expect ramifications.
