It is defensible because he’s human and humans think aloud with non politically correct statements all the time.
The only mistake he made was going back into a high profile job.
Freedom of speech is why he is not experiencing repercussions from the government for his behavior. Freedom of speech does not protect your job in a private company when you are too stupid to understand your position.

He’s not in jail.
Why do so many people struggle with this freedom of speech defense? Even on this forum moderators delete and ban people over words so you know the difference.
If you want to be mad at someone be mad at Gruden and Bruce Allen for emailing this stuff and Allen used his work email at Washington Football Team which is currently under investigation for a toxic work environment and leaking info about his boss.
A wise man once said, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone..."
Grace and forgiveness is a lost art. The baby is being thrown out with the bathwater as we become more irreligious.
Not a society I look forward to living in. Well, we're already 3/4's of the way in it I suppose, and this is what we get.
Everyone says or does stuff they shouldn't. Literally, every human being ever.
This is the glaring problem of cancel culture.
The problem with this is a that there usually are actions connected to those words. And that’s unacceptable.

Why do so many people struggle to understand that emails are private communication?
Tell us, when was the last time your employer read your 10 year old emails, then gave them to the media to publish them?
Not too worried. He's a multi millionaire and a well respected coach by the players who have had the privilege to be under his tutelage. The woke army can go eff off.
Was a well respected coach. I am sure that changed once those emails surfaced.
I understand where you're coming from.
However, it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for him to go back to any kind of significant role in football no matter what he does to rectify the situation. I suppose he could wrap himself in rainbows and march in pride parades, but that stuff comes across as pandering, self-righteous, and cringe-worthy with a healthy dose of hypocrisy, no matter who does it.
Ultimately, cancel culture would have caused this even if the league did nothing.
And no, not all of us work in a corporate atmosphere mired in PC obsessiveness which is part of the origins of cancel culture.
Of course it would be impossible to get back into football. That's what we call the consequences ones own actions. I can understand a slip up or mistake here and there because we're all human and we all make mistakes. But that's not what this was. Over the course of years he dragged specific individuals, league policy and decision, and general groups of people that he has to work with in some pretty blatant ways. He knew what he was doing and he knew that it went against the grain of the private corporation that he works for. Now he's facing the consequences of his actions. "Forgiveness" is important - everyone makes mistakes and deserves second chances. But accountability is equally (if not more) important. And people need to understand there are consequences for their own actions. Gruden absolutely knew at the time that his emails would get him into hot water if they were ever found out and he sent them anyway (repeatedly). Now he's facing the music.
This really isn't about "PC obsessiveness." This stuff is pretty black and white and goes well beyond simply not saying nice things. Much of what he said would make any owner question his ability to do his job. How can a coach who is using homophobic language and deriding the decision to draft gay players be expected to fairly lead players in a league with a growing number of gay players (inc. one on his own roster)? How can he be expected to work fairly with female officials when he criticized the decision to hire female officials in the first place? How can he expected to care for the physical well-being of his players when he repeatedly mocked and criticized the league's safety measures? How can you trust that your employee is going to perform his job as expected when he repeatedly slandered and criticized league leadership?
You can't. And that's why it's a pretty easy call. If he was fired (or "resigned") just over his comments about Obama, Biden, or even the questionable commentary about the size of a black man's lips, you'd have a good case for "CANCEL CULTURE!!!!" as those things have little to do with his management of the team. But that's not all it was by a long shot.
