Something I learned very fast working in government…..bodes well for everyone else:

NEVER put in an email what you will see on the front page of your local newspaper.

Does not matter how long ago.

Gruden obviously never learned the Rule of Holes. He did not stop digging.

None of which can be used to fire you for non-politically correct emails.

Also, John Gruden wasn’t even employed by the NFL when he sent those emails.

Sure, if you’re a woke liberal up to date with all the non-politically correct offensive keywords today. Goodluck keeping track of that ever-growing list.

Any of which can be used to fire you if company ownership feels your words or actions endanger or reflect badly on the company.

It's a major business and leadership (Gruden) can't be swinging slurs around and not reap the repercussions.
It was not so much the gay slurs as it was the racial stuff that done him in.

This is sort of irrelevant as it depends on the employer, the individual, and the scenarios that would lead to such a review. Most of us probably haven't had our 10 year old emails reviewed, but most of us also aren't ownership/senior leadership of multi-billion dollar franchises, or famous NFL coaches.

But the point is, your work emails are not private. They are reviewable and what you write in those emails should be written with the understanding that they could be reviewed at some point and you could be held responsible for what you say in them. In fact, most places make you sign documentation that you understand that as part of the onboarding process.

Wrong.. I can be fired for whatever the employer wants in a right to work state.

Doesn’t matter if Gruden was employed or not.

He tarnished the shield and chose to resign.

Exactly. I'm really amazed at the number of people here who don't have the slightest clue about how "freedom of speech" works.

It's actually harder to get fired from a government (municipal/state/federal) than a private sector job for such things because termination by the government could be considered punishment or reprisal (which is obviously protected against under the 1st amendment). The government would have to be able to demonstrate that what was said actually called into question the ability of the individual's right to carry out their assigned job. The private sector has no such requirement.

I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who presumably graduated high school who believe that freedom of speech means you can say (or write) anything you want, anyplace you want, any time you want and without consequences from anyone.

*And they often self-identify as "Patriots".
