I mean half the people in the movie are supposed to be Spanish speaking. Not like the whole movie is in Spanish, that wouldn't make sense for the Jets side.
Artistically it reinforces the two worlds colliding.
Spanish, Portuguese, French, UK, etc. The population of Native Peoples in the Americas took a real hit early on, mostly from infectious disease & the dislocations that caused. But the numbers have recovered - although it's not clear if to the same numbers as pre-European numbers. The languages, religions & cultures are still there (& in N. America - Mexico, the US, Canada as well). They have been touched by the Consumer trends & markets driven by the US multinationals (& others), but the people are still there.
Most of the Hispanics in the US didn't want to come here to live, & as far as I know, they want to make enough money to return to their home country & establish themselves better there, rather than here.
The English didn't really intermingle with the natives. The Spanish did, and they also intermingled with the slaves. We really live in a USA bubble, but only 3% of the total slave trade ended up in the USA. Most of it wound up in the Caribbean and South America.

Artistically, in the original show, they spoke English.

That makes no sense.
Artistically it doesn't need to be the same as the original.
I don't think Spielberg is using that movie script. He is using a more stage originated one.

This isn't like Fem-Ghostbusters remake.
It was a stage show before it was a movie. The audience were English speaking Americans. The original show was spoken in English. The movie that came next was spoken in English. I am really disappointed in Spielberg.
Added. Most Puerto Ricans who lived in NYC at the time were bilingual.

Difference? The Spaniards and Portuguese did not bring women with them, so if they wanted to get it on, it was with indigenous or Africans. Unfortunately in the beginning, it was mostly done via rape.

I don't see what the big hang up is. Sure those movies and Stage were in English because we all know that was the pretty much the audience.
We've come a long way, illegal immigration notwithstanding, and subtitles for the sake of a more realistic take, albeit artistic, shouldn't be kryptonite.
Sure,..many were bilingual, and I expect them to be speaking English for scenes where they interact with English speakers but when at home I bet you those same PRs were speaking Spanish to their family.
The original was fantastic and the remakes coming out of pedowood pretty much suck, so I will just watch the original again.
