Speaking to IGN in a recent interview, Spielberg said that he chose to not subtitle any of the Spanish dialogue in the film “out of respect for the inclusivity of our intentions to hire a totally Latinx cast to play the Sharks’ boys and girls.”
I have the original movie, I’ll just watch that. I’m glad they are using real Latinos, but I have enough trouble hearing much less trying to figure out another language.
I never thought that Natalie Wood was the right choice to play Maria, but I just saw the trailer for the 2021 version, and I think if someone saw the 1961 version, there is very little reason to see this new version. I won't be spending my money on it, anyway.
Spaniards came killed and and wiped out all of South and Central America. Those same people want to wipe English as Americas language... F them.
Spanish, Portuguese, French, UK, etc. The population of Native Peoples in the Americas took a real hit early on, mostly from infectious disease & the dislocations that caused. But the numbers have recovered - although it's not clear if to the same numbers as pre-European numbers. The languages, religions & cultures are still there (& in N. America - Mexico, the US, Canada as well). They have been touched by the Consumer trends & markets driven by the US multinationals (& others), but the people are still there.
Most of the Hispanics in the US didn't want to come here to live, & as far as I know, they want to make enough money to return to their home country & establish themselves better there, rather than here.
I have no bone to pick with the Latin world. However it is amusing to see social justice attempts to prop them up as victim status by milking their mulatto indigenous status, all while speaking the imperial language and practicing the imperial religion, which helps to cover up tribal rivalries and human sacrifice. The Spanish were by far the least delicate in their dealings with the natives.
If they want to make movies that lose money, that's okay with me.
