"Sangamon County Circuit Judge Raylene Grischow on Friday granted a request from attorney Tom DeVore to temporarily halt the governor’s executive orders on masking and quarantining for schools, finding that the measures are beyond the governor’s authority and deprive students of due process."
This a very interesting situation, to say the least. Students in Illinois have been under mask mandates ever since they went back to school. 140 or so districts sued the state, claiming that the schools do not have the right to exclude a child from school, force them to wear a mask, or test unvaccinated teachers every week without an order from the health department. Friday, a judge agreed and essentially declared the state's actions unconstitutional. Kids were waiting with baited breath all weekend to see if they could go mask optional on Monday.
You'd think it'd be that simple. Court rules that it's unconstitutional, kids all go back today mask optional. But nope, that's not the case. The 140 districts in this case are all mask optional, but for the other 700 districts in the state, it's sort of a Wild West. In the footnotes of the case, the judge essentially declared the Governor's school mask mandates unconstitutional, and all those districts not involved in the lawsuit did not have to enforce the mandates.
Well, today, some schools took the day off school today to sort it all out. Some went mask optional. Others held back, saying they're keeping their mask mandates. Lawyers offered conflicting advice to each school, saying that if a district was NOT part of the class action and required masks, they'd be opening themselves up to legal action. You could have one school mask optional, and one 10 minutes down the road where masks were required. Today in one of the suburban schools that still maintained their mask mandate, 1/2 the junior high was in the office due to their refusal to wear a mask.
The governor has vowed to appeal the case, and it's gotten the state, its schools, students, and community members quite riled up. The best thing for him to do is to take the L and move on. But no, most people anticipate him fighting this tooth and nail until the bitter end.
With NJ, DE, and CA ending their indoor mask mandates soon, perhaps this is the push that the IL Governor needs. It's crazy what's going on in the state's schools at the moment.
I teach in a rural school, where 85-90% of students chose to go maskless today. It was absolutely wonderful and one of the best days of my lives. The high-fives down the hallway, the smiles, the energy in the school was off the charts for a Monday in February. It was very much needed and a step in the right direction!
If I had kids in Illinois public schools they would be removed. In fact if I had school aged kids I wouldn’t be living in this state. They all went ballistic over this ruling. Some Chicagoland districts ruled to mandate masks, some cancelled classes, very few said it’s up to the kids and parents. Most of the suburbs where people vote blue seem to be stuck in the hypnotic state of “Covid will kill” them. Like a frickin’ cloth mask is gonna help? Fear of Covid has turned into a mental disease in this area for many more people than is healthy for society. It’s unreal.
For the younger ones, under 5 years old. The older kids will still need to wear a face mask. The little ones won't know that is going on yet. They'll be dismissed from wearing a face mask. Like children 3 years old and below. Though I've seen a mom make her daughter wear a face mask at 3 years old. Really junk. But I guess in public areas like a mall, the mom's best interest is shopping. So the kid must follow. Regardless if it may affect her breathing.

Well, some think masking will reduce the risk of contracting covid to 0%, so masking Kiddies forever is fine and dandy!
Well, typically with these kinds of issues, its NEVER about the health/safety aspect...its really about CONTROL, (citizens doing what they are told to do), enforcing it on kids in school is the perfect time to 'teach them a lesson in life'...so they will OBEY and comply when they get older.
