Default Another general, now?

The last Russian general in charge lasted - checks notes - 3 months.

For those unaware, you're generally (hah!) not relieved of your command when you put in a sterling performance and the war goes well.

Ever play poker? When a bad poker player overplays his hand, the other people at the table benefit. Now Russia decided, quite on their own, to add a huge bunch of chips to the pot. They felt they had a good hand and that the other players didn't have the nerve to stay in the game. Yet much to Russia's dismay, the West didn't fold, like they did last time. And now Russia is looking for a way to recover as much as they can. Their only way of staying at the table is to keep raising the stakes. Is their bankroll deep enough? I rather doubt that.

The thing is, though - while the other players may benefit, it's only because Russia upped the ante initially. Why shouldn't they maximize their advantage on Russia's bad bet?

I think escalating Gerasimov, the Chief of Staff, to this role is a sign Putin has decided to do another invasion from Belarus. Based on a friend from Belarus, there have been lots of preparations and even the Belarusian units have been put under the umbrella of the Russian military. So you can imagine Gerasimov is acting in the role of a joint commander for a coalition of militaries. Of course according to him, Belarus is completely dependent on Russia economically and Putin is the only reason Lukashenko is still in power since he is deeply unpopular. Also, Russia is posed to announce the end of SMO today. It's likely they will declare war officially.

Wider front needs more commanders. Russians have army and plan, not just bits and pieces of donated goods and ideas...

Well, it is US plan, win -win. Russia goes down is good, Europe goes down is good, Russia and Europe bled to death is good. We use our old junk to expose what Russia has to offer fix our mistakes, improve, build new weapon systems for rolls of printed toilet paper..

Could be ...sounds plausible ....isn't Belarus a small country...population about 10 million ...if my
memory is correct....not sure how powerful their military is ...sounds like you or your friend would know...
Ukraine should always keep an eye open for such a threat...I assume they are.

Russia doesn't seem to have developed a competent team of leaders. Don't know what kind of plan they could possibly have that is any better than what they have tried already.

Lukashenko had better hope his army is on board with the idea of fighting pissed-off well-armed Ukrainian soldiers, rather than carrying out their usual duties of shoving around civilians.
