If a president were to give an interview and inadvertently or intentionally talk about information from a classified document, he would effectively be declassifying that document........by action, not thought.
The difference in this vs thinking a document into a declassified state is that the process would kick in. Staff and/or agencies watching the interview would realize what he has done and take action to relabel the documents and mitigate any damage done by releasing the information in a public setting.
Trump likely knows this and is either ignorantly or intentionally conflating the two things to defend himself.....at least in the court of opinion. He and his lawyers refuse to make this argument in a real court.

Did Trump allow all this Fentanyl in our country to kill Americans? Did Trump pull of of Afghanistan and had 13 soldiers killed? Did Trump have wide open borders to allow terrorists and rapists into our country to kill Americans? Did Trump have a son that was doped up and into prostitution and colluded with the big guy? Did Trump show weakness and get Ukraine and Russia in a war that killed many people? You ever think your guy Biden will ever have to be accountable for anything? Of course not. He is untouchable. He makes life for many Americans miserable. People can't afford anything and crime is rampant but y'all keep on supporting your great guy.

I don't think that will fly. No judge is going to accept that because as a departing President the documents were not his to take home to keep.
Maybe if he took them during his Presidency to work on and they just piled up at MAL he could craft a ridiculous defense out of that.
Every indication is these were moved illegally to keep. He as much as said that when Hannity asked him how they were packed. And, there are probably mover's stickers or markings on the boxes that match an inventory in GSA's possession.
Bottom line?? Trump will never be president again.
