It was apparently for his refusing a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee - a show trial disguised as an "investigation", staged by the Democrats where none of the accused were allowed to testify, and were never allowed to question the witnesses against them.
In 3rd world countries such a procedure would more correctly be called a "kangaroo court" - commonly used by dictators as a weapon to destroy their political opponents.

Former top Trump White House advisor Steve Bannon was sentenced Friday to four months in jail for defying a subpoena from the congressional probe of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. A U.S. District judge also fined Bannon $6,500. But he ruled that Bannon will not have to serve the sentence until an expected appeal plays out.
Democrats wanted the court to sentence Bannon to six months in jail — the top end of the federal sentencing guidelines range — and the maximum fine of $200,000.
A right-wing media figure and onetime close ally of former President Donald Trump, Bannon “consistently acted in bad faith” as he tried to impede the House select committee’s investigation, Democrats argued.
Yes, contempt of Congress is a crime subject to enforcement. The legislative branch is separate from the judicial branch, and the role of Congress is to investigate, rather than prosecute. Thus their actions are not subject to the same precepts as the judicial branch.
The Constitution grants Congress certain broad powers, but is silent on its subpoena power. However, the U.S. Supreme Court clarified Congress's power to issue subpoenas in a 1917 case (Marshall v. Gordon), stating that "in virtue of the grant of legislative authority there [was] a power implied to deal with contempt." Essentially, the Court held that the Constitution's text implies a power to investigate given its power to legislate. Therefore, refusal to cooperate with a congressional investigation directly challenges this authority and may be punishable as contempt.
Bannon's sentencing is legal and appropriate under the Constitution.

He's lucky he only got four months and a $6500 fine. He should've been taken straight to jail in handcuffs.
He should have just complied with the subpeona. What's he got to hide?
