A mail carrier was shot to death Friday evening in Milwaukee, police said.
Police said the 44-year-old man had worked for the US Postal Service for 18 years. They did not release his name.
“The Milwaukee Police Department sends our sincere condolences to the victim’s family and to the USPS for the loss of their member,” the department said in a statement.
Investigators did not provide any information about suspects or motive.
"These days"? The armed robberies of letter carriers has always been a big deal. Only slowing down when counties stopped mailing welfare checks, because so may were stolen. Los Angeles County had people go to check cashing businesses before issuing an electronic benefits card started. And Social Security started forcing direct deposit. No longer was the 1st, 3rd and 15th of the month high pucker factor for fear a gun would be put to the back of your head days. However the keys that are carried became in demand burglary tools. So to cut down on thefts new locks with less easily copied keys are being phased in all over the country.
However since it became harder for thieves to 3D print the new mall key than the older arrow key that letter carriers had mail attacks on the truck locks when the carrier is at the other end of a block to empty a vehicle of its mail have been supplemented by increasingly going after the letter carrier for his keys. And armed robberies are going back to the old government check day levels. Only now police and postal inspector reaction forces can't just plan on working the 3 days a month, in the morning when the truck was still full of full routes worth of checks since the new target, the keys are available 12 hours a day, 7 days a week where the postal service delivers for Amazon on Sundays.
This, and stories like it, are sad and depressing. It almost makes you wonder if people do this senseless stuff just because they know it brings the whole community down. Prayers for the family and hopefully the perp never enjoys freedom again.
We lived in Shorewood (adjacent to Milwaukee proper) for a time and I loved the walking mailmen (being a suburbanite my whole life). But I felt for them in the weather and in places that were not so safe. I suppose it could happen to anyone anywhere but in a vehicle, I would personally feel safer.
This is what people voted for and they are getting it good and hard.
RIP to the innocent hard working person.
Keep the partisan stuff out of this. Delivering mail and packages has alot of risk to it. This could have happened in any cities, Democratic-ran or Republican-ran.
Jacksonville, FL, this year. Actually, this was last month.

Exactly. And a follow up question, what possible difference would an EXTREMELY robust police department have on this case? What do blamers expect a police department to be able to DO, that his police department isn't doing? This is a postman delivering the mail right out in the open, who was shot by a lone gunman who ran off.
As it is, they have a photo of the car and video of the gunman, so it's somewhat likely this sad case will be solved.
