Having witnessed a LOT of belly-aching over food inflation we've all had to listen to over the past year, are you one of the very few who would willingly pay much higher prices at the grocery store, to ensure that all farm workers are legally here?
Are you sure?
Hypocrisy seems to go both ways.
It wont be much higher prices.
But I'd rather pay more to ensure that farmers higher legal workers than pay more, as we have, due to bad political decisions and all the other made up excuses, drought, floods, bird flu, etc. etc. that we are fed every year when prices increase.

Illegals are no bargain anyway when you factor in their social costs of over $100 billion a year. So how much does that head of lettuce "actually" cost right now?

And you don't think the low paid Agricultural Worker doesn't qualify for food stamps, think again...

Lettuce isn't a Florida crop anyway. Oranges, tomatoes, watermelons. A lot of that is exports also. But some people believe we will all starve without Florida farmers paying undercut wages to illegal aliens.
Yes I can blame them for breaking the law just as I blame anyone else for breaking the law.
Plenty of Americans work hard labor jobs and plenty used to pick crops. I know people who work in slaughterhouses, hotels, restaurants, factories, construction, etc. How many citizens do you know that can pick up and move to follow the crops and provide a living on that seasonal low paying work now?
It was during WWII when the US implemented the guest worker program for agriculture because so many American men let to fight the war leaving farmers shorthanded. From the Bracero program legal seasonal guest worker programs continued to grow. So we have a legal system in place.
At what rate of pay ? And only for a season. These folks migrate from farm to farm all over the USA.

Let's not get started on the "actual" cost of a head of lettuce. Considering we pay about $25 BILLION a year in farm subsidies, the actual cost of a head of lettuce is stratospheric.
So laws that require the farms to provide proof of legal status for every worker will result in higher food costs and understaffed agriculture. I'm guessing most Americans wouldn't last very long working on a farm in this day and age even if wages were higher.
"Whine" seems harsh. Farmers, like truckers, are essential to our very existence. If they are upset about something, and call out for help, we need to listen and respect them enough to believe them.
Maybe they shouldn't grow more than the available pool of legal labor.
