After hearing President Obama talk about the millions of gallons of gas we lose because of improperly inflated tires, I think the time has come for a federal law requiring all service stations to have an attendant to pump the gas and check the tire air pressure and adjust it as needed.
2 states- Oregon and New Jersey already mandate attendants and the gas in those states is actually CHEAPER than it is elsewhere! When you consider that this would cost nothing, save millions of gallons of gas AND employ thousands of mostly teenage entry level workers! It is really a win-win-win for everybody. Cheapest gas in the nation - New Jersey's full service - May. 22, 2007
I cannot remark about Oregon but the few NJ stations that I have stopped in will pump the gas for you and MAYBE ask if you want your oil checked. I have never seen anyone check the tire pressure and even washing the windshield seems to be forgotten. I think most of them just pump the gas and not much more and are probably only doing it because it is a state law. But I agree with you, as each year goes by we lose another valueable customer service.
Buy an air gauge and check your own tires for crying out loud!
Or, go to your local tire store and ask them - they will do it gladly
We bought these caps for a quick visual check. No need to constantly monitor with a gauge, just buy the cap with the right pressure range for your car.
I don't know about you... but I don't live in Oregon or New Jersey but in other states it cost a heck of a lot more for "full service"... not to mention the "tips" that they expect...
And gas price variation from state to state is mostly a component of gas taxes. NJ has some of the lowest gas taxes in the country... yet the state has the third largest deficit of $3 billion for this year.

Go to one of the threads about the lazy dropouts who don't want to work, and ask yourself if you really want one of those guys messing around under you hood and fooling with your tires.
