Unreal. And they will more than likely lecture and embarrass you as they're giving the smoker the fine. 911 is for EMERGENCIES ONLY! I know. And if you do dial 911 to report a violation, they will only help you out as far as giving you the 800 number to dial. And actually, more than likely, the police will not even show up.

You can smoke things other than cigars in "cigar bars", and as for the lack of private clubs--you asked for the right to set up special places for smokers, and this part of the law gives you that right. If not enough of your fellow smokers are interested in doing that, that isn't a problem with the law.

Nope, statewide.

I don't know of the restaurant bars with seperate entrances, I don't understand the meaning of it.
The basic idea is that if you have a bar which almost only serves drinks, you are exempted from the law. Now if you have a restaurant with a bar in the same space, then the bar is covered by the law. But if you have a restaurant with a bar that is in a separated space (separate entrance and ventilation), then it will also be exempted.

Having lived in New York and Chicago, I'm already used to not being allowed to smoke anywhere... being here was a pleasant change of pace, until the do-gooders and thought-police rammed their agenda down here, as well....

I'll continue to patronize places which allow smoking and go to the trouble to get the exemption. And I will continue to state that restaurants should think about investing in seperate ventilation systems for smoking areas, which usually can get you an exemption as well...

There doesn't have to be an n"either/or" mentality about smoking... there IS a middle ground everyone can live with. . .. if they chose to.

Yeah, but as you can see, not many people are willing to give the middle ground a shot.

Again, given all the exemptions this law is very much a middle-ground approach--and yet here we see smokers still complaining.

So who exactly is showing the inability to compromise?

I'm more than willing to compromise. However, as I stated in a previous post, I went out last evening and noticed a considerable difference in business. I'm more worried about great places going out of business more than anything else.

The scientific evidence I have seen suggests that smoking restrictions typically have little effect on the relevant business activities, and if anything the effect may well be a net positive. Which makes sense when you realize only around 20% of Americans are smokers.

True...but it doesn't help that people on here are bitter and saying they're not going to bars and restaurants that don't allow it. Again, it's not their fault. It is now the law in the state of PA, and they have to follow it. Don't punish yourselves and our businesses to try and prove a point.

Can't think of their screen names off hand, but I've seen many posts on this thread(and the previous smoking thread), from both smokers and non smokers, who were pretty adamant in there stances that they wouldn't patronize many establishments anymore.

Wow!!! Lay off the personal attack. Yes, they will go out of business. Many in Ohio along the PA state line have gone out of business since they passed their absolutely ridiculous non-smoking law two years ago.
