Personally, as a woman, in the summer yes, I'd prefer my legs to be shaven. I've got german in me so you just do NOT want to see my legs when they haven't been shaved....yikes.
The problem with America is the press and the media. It keeps the population in a zombie state of ignorance. I have seen professional people who have not a clue as to what is really going on in America so I will tell you. As long as we adhere to capitalism we are doomed to spiral into oblivion. Times will only get rougher as we progress down the slope of inflation and then deflation and even our savings if we have any will be worthless. We will need wagon loads of money to buy a quart of milk and a loaf of bread. We are a hopeless nation and the end is very soon.
You know what I think would help? This is a serious suggestion...going back to school. I wish I could go back & take a few classes here & there. Keeps your brain busy. Maybe if they lowered the cost of audit classes, more of us who want to keep learning could do so. But in the meantime, I like to have fluff, no-brainer things to entertain me. There's just way too much negativity out there, when I get home from work, I like to relax.

Not really, I guess that's just the way it is. The same could be said for men about losing their hair, penis enlargement, etc. It plays into people's insecurities. I'm fine w/that because I know what works on me & what doesn't. Not all advertising that I see will make me buy a product because if I seriously have no use for it or if I think it looks silly, I just don't buy into it. I'm guessing you're a guy, if so & you like women, would it turn you off, even just a little, if a woman didn't shave?

And how did we get here? Why should I care if Lindsey Lohan's lesbian lover was admitted to a hospital in LA? Why should I care about Paris Hilton?
Furthermore, what is with the emphasis on these youngsters who haven't even lived long enough to figure out what it's all about?
I have heard other cultures are not this way. What is wrong with Americans?
The problem with America's "culture" is we don't have one. It's all based on fooling the people into war and consumerism, and the rest of the crap you mentioned is just used as filler.
The "infotainment" complex is closely linked to the military-industrial complex.
In answer to the OP: the ancient Romans called it bread and circuses. If you keep the masses entertained, they aren't quite as likely to cause trouble for the powers-that-be. Thus the (manufactured) cult of the "celebrity."
