I agree that if you have ever lived there it is hard to move on from it. I have never lived there only visited twice before. And didn't want to leave because of how beautiful the scenery is over there.
Uh doesn't that described most countries and continents in the world. United states, middle east, europe, mexico, china, india, etc. These last 8 year's under george bush haven't been to pleasant. For the middle and lower class here in the states.
In most parts of Africa there isn't a middle class....you are either rich or dirt poor and as someone already mentioned the poor in the USA are rich compared to the poor in Africa. Have you been to Africa?

Actually I have been several times. And you can't compare the poor in america to any country or continent really. Mexico, jamaica, india, china, pakistan, iran, iraq, russia, or anywhere else.

Where in Africa have you visited. I'm half African, so I visit there and still go back for Family occassions. Explain why you can't compare poor in America to any of the countries you've mentioned....I'm afraid I have lost you.
Finally a thread showing the beauty of Africa. I hope to one day visit the continent, especially Egypt, Nigeria/Ghana, & South Africa.
Here's a warning if you visit Egypt. When the tour bus takes you to the pyramids don't have anything of value in your pockets or any jewelry. Once you step off the bus you'll be surrounded by pickpockets who're trying to sell you cheap trinkets. In reality they're checking your pockets. Be careful of the food and drink. One of the guys from our ship ate something in town and was hooked up to an IV for several days because of violent vomiting and the runs. The Cairo museum is fantastic. You could spend a week there and not see everything there is to see. A few years ago I read a news story that South Africa insurance companies were selling "rape insurance" because at the time it was considered the rape capital of the world.
I'm from the Caribbean (just next door) and to this very day, I still have people asking me about huts, roads (whether we have them or not) and the people ("oh my God! I saw Chinese/Indian/White people in Jamaica and they were speaking the language!) I'm from the Virgin Islands and we have a very visible Palestinian, Dominican and Philippino population there who talk just like me.
When I dream about Africa, I am being chopped to pieces by machetes and boiled in a big black pot and fed to children with pot bellies and flies on their faces.
And, I wake up moaning and sweating.
If my favorite African, Charlize Theron, is in the dream I don't get chopped up or eaten.

the same can be said of those who live in those regions who visit the US for the first time/
