The beds of pickup trucks have always seemed like wasted space to me unless you need to transport a lot of big things that don't need to be protected from the elements.
Taking stuff to the dump, loading up "beauty bark" and garden soil for the garden, and helping family members move was about the only thing I really ever used the Ranger for. It's currently having some overheating issues which I've not gotten around to fixing so mostly it just sits right now.

Bought my first Saturn because the good reputation they had at the time (back in 1993). Bought the 2nd Saturn because I was happy with the first one - and the buying experience was pleasant.

(sorry - forgot to add the reason WHY I bought what I bought).

1. Have a 1987 Civic Si with 270,000 miles on the odometer: drive this one to work and back 50 miles per day, winter and summer.

2. 1981 Ford F-150 I drive perhaps 1,000 miles per year. Only drive it during moose season, and also salmon fishing season. It has a topper, where I sleep at when fishing, and does a good job keeping things and the moose meat dry on my way back from hunting.

3. 2009 manual transmission Subaru Forester. Bought this one because of it's excellent traction control, but it's mostly parked in the garage untill I retire in five years.

4. Wife has a 1994 Suzuki Sidekick. She loves this thing, and doesn't want to drive the Subaru. Like the Civic, it's pretty good on fuel, and the traction isn't bad.

2004 Prius hybrid for obvious reasons
2003 5 speed Honda Element (good for moving our amps and musical gear)
1988 Limited Edition "Red Hot" 4 speed Mini Cooper...because it's just too damn cool, gets great gas mileage for not being a hybrid and it is so original "Italian Job" fun to drive!

2006 Honda Civic coupe...a sort of combination practical, economical and reliable car with a touch of sportiness. It's a fun car to drive and I think for an under 20K car, it's great value.

It's really too bad that the Hummer is now discontinued. It was very popular around here too, for the same reasons you mention. It's also reported to be the most popular vehicle among Iraqi's. They love it.

I have a Dodge Caravan, which now has over 133,000 miles on it. It's my third Chrysler minivan. I love them, and I hate to see what has happened to Chrysler, again. Obviously, after Lee Iacocca rebuilt that company in the 80's and made it profitable once again (without government help, except to guarantee the loans, which were paid back early) the people after him didn't learn anything from him. What a shame. His book, "Iacocca" is a great read for a look into the auto industry and how he turned Chrysler around. I'm sure you can find it at the library.

The minivan was first proposed by Iacocca at Ford, but Henry Ford wanted nothing to do with it. So, when Iacocca went to Chrysler, he built it. It is still the most popular of all the minivans.
