I bought my 1990 Mazda Miata in 1995 for several reasons. First, it was a car in good shape that I could afford. Second, at the time I was a real estate agent and driving up to list or show a home in that car made me 'look' more successful than I actually was - it helped my image in the industry I had chosen to work in. And it got (and still gets) great gas mileage! I'm no longer a real estate agent - haven't been for ten years and in fact am no longer working at all as of last month when I left my tax advisor job.
I still love to drive that car when I must drive at all, but the main reason I keep it is because I simply cannot afford to replace it. In order to get a vehicle in better condition, I'd have to spend 4-5 times what I could get by selling it.
Just traded in my '01 Volkswagen Passat. Bought a '09 Audi A4. Most room in it's class, fantastic handling and all wheel drive, decent fuel efficiency for a V6 at 17/26 mpg. I'm partial to the feel of German cars and appreciate how well they age.
1998 Jeep TJ (Wrangler)
Bought in 2003 for off-roading. Upgrades include a 4" lift, 33x12.5" BFGs, front locker, some armor, rear bumper, etc.
2002 Chevy Astro Minivan
Bought in 2006. Needed something that could carry "stuff" as well as people. The Jeep has very little capacity for "stuff", and virtually none at all if you have 4 people in the car. I chose the Astro over other minivans because it's rear wheel drive and has enough towing capacity to flat tow the Jeep.
2003 VW "New" Beetle(girlfriend's car)
She got it because it's "cute". It gets the best mileage, so it's the car we take most places, unless we need to carry a bunch of "stuff".
Prior to the minivan, I had a 1997 Ford Contour. I bought it new and put 160k miles on it in about a decade. That was a fantastic car that gave me very few problems over the years. It was also very comfortable and handled great. Despite being a 4 cylinder, it was still pretty peppy. I would buy another Ford in a heartbeat, and probably will.
Recently sold an '87 944. Loved that car - just didn't drive it a lot anymore. Maybe I'll pick up a 951 or an S2 someday. Now I'm down to just a 2000 Celica GT-S. Both cars are total garage queens and still look new.
Great car. I owned a 1985.5 944 for about 8 years. Other than the clutch master cylinder needing to be replaced every two years, it was a very solid car. The 50/50 weight distribution allowed me to scare the crap out of many people when I took sharp curves at 60+ mph.

I own a 2007 Ford Explorer 4X4. My wife and I have four children and we need a vehicle with three row seating. We also needed a 4X4 since the winters in New York some times sends us a lot of snow.
I've got an FJ cruiser for exploring the roads less travelled in Utah and a well worn Corolla for getting to work and back + a bicycle for the same purpose when the weather isn't bad. Too bad Toyota doesn't make bikes too.
I have a Mercury Mariner, similar to the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute.
It is very sporty, gets pretty good gas mileage around town even with the V6 and provides room for the grandkids and friends, dogs (3), groceries and the like.
It is also a lot of fun to drive - has a really tight turning radius and accelerates beautifully.
I also do like sitting up higher, especially here in NM where practically everyone drives something bigger.
I drove it across country when I moved from NJ to NM (2000+ miles) and it did great loaded with stuff. I think I averaged about 26 MPG overall.
My father has bought 6 Hondas over the last 15 years. I currently have a 2006 civic coupe and my Wife has the 09 Nissan Altima. Awesome solid reliable cars.
It is too bad American cars are such crap but we are very happy with ours and we will never buy American again. Down with GM , Down with Chrysler, Down with Ford, Down with the UAW!!
I own a LX470. Comfy, dependable, and not made by any UAW goons. It only gets brought out when I have to leave the neighborhood, otherwise I can walk most anywhere for my essentials and entertainment.
I will admit to startling passengers with the Subie on a snow covered road but you should hear them when I do the same speed with the Buick. I think god made snow and ice so drivers could have fun.
