I don't believe many people are comfortable outlawing abortion in the first trimester --- but I do believe most people are at best uneasy if not completely repelled by abortion past viability, whether the actual fetus in question is viable or not.
To some of these people, anyone who dare suggests it be outlawed (as it actually currently is) at ANY time...even during the third trimester....is a sexist and hates women - well, that or a Bible thumper.
Since when is fetal demise abortion? Abortion is the premature ending of an ongoing pregnancy. Fetal demise is just that - the fetus died of natural causes. No abortion there.
This is a semantic point with no actual relevance. For one thing, there is no accepted definition of fetal demise in the US, and for another, abortion is a medical procedure. It would be entirely common for a case of fetal death at a point up to 28 weeks to be treated via the insertion of laminaria followed by the performance of a dilatation and extraction. If you don't want to call that an abortion, fine.

How is an abortion responsible for the births of your two nieces?
The number of abortions in 1972 was about 1/10 the number of abortions in 1973.
I take it the source for that was your imagination. Legal abortions had been performed in the US since 1966. Even though the decision in Roe was handed down in January of 1973, it took quite some time for the necessary infrastructure to appear in states where abortion had been illegal. The actual estimated number of US abortions in 1972 was 586,000. For 1973, it was 745,000. Subsequent years were as follow: 1974: 899,000. 1975: 1,034,000. 1976: 1,179,000.

I don't remember where I read it, but I didn't dream it up. I'll look for it later.
Your own statistics, however, do show the number doubling in the four years from 72-76.
I think -- because in these cases, adoption is the best approach, that the adoptive couple pay the expenses. There are many good people who very much want a baby and would be glad to pay the medical costs of having a baby.
That would be fine where the birth-mother-to-be was a willing participant in the scheme. Where not, you would simply be invalidating the rights of women by compelling them to serve as incubators in service to little more than other people's vanity.
I'll love the day when you can determine the sexual orientation of a fetus and people start aborting gay babies and then the liberals throw themselves off of cliffs because their torn as what to do.
