First of all, this is really old news, so I have no idea why there's a new article about it. Be that as it may, it doesn't make the First Lady more "special", but it does speak to the incredible journey African Americans have endured in this country. Why do you have a problem with her family's background being documented and reported about?

Possibly. I'm sure they have records and can trace it. It would be interesting to find out.

Despite it all and ignoring the policies of the current administration - from a social equality perspective; its nice and validating for me to have a black president.

Growing up, there was always that question, "Do you think during your life we'll elect a black president?" I always thought why wouldn't we. I never bought into the theory that Americans are a bunch of racists - I always thought the majority of us didnt care about race.

And for that, cheers!

I don't have a problem with it , I think it is very comical and typical of the main stream media. I mean holy cow not only is she a fashion icon she is a descendant from slaves!!!!!!!

I think its cool and extremely relevent. After all, it wasn't that long ago that the Obamas would not have been able to stay in certain hotels in the DC area - and now they live in the white house.
To me, this is an example on how great our country actually is ----- lets see this happen (without a war) in most other countries.

My heart did break though when I heard of little Marvina(?) -- what kind of monster could sell a six year old girl?!

It's a fact for the country to take pride in. Progress - it happens.

I think the point is this: Who the hell cares, and is this important?

She was the one who was not proud of "her" country. Well, we are not "proud" of them. They are simply Chicago thug trash. And they are destroying our country! I couldn't care less about her history!

You have to realize, some people think that America "invented" slavery. Hell, slavery still exists in the world today.

Jews are decendents of slaves if ya wanna get technical!

These people (the Obama's, not blacks) are so freakin' disgusting I just want to barf.
