ATLANTA (AP) - Former President Jimmy Carter is no stranger to global conflicts; now he's the flashpoint in a small-town argument.

The airport in Americus, Ga., near Carter's hometown of Plains, is set to be renamed for the former president.

Town abuzz: S. Ga. airport to be named for Carter

I wonder how many streets were renamed for Martin Luther King across America?

Carter was not a good President in my mind, but he was an honorable man (for a Navy man). He continues to act as a role model for many Americans. Just my $0.02 Yuan worth.

I don't see a problem. He was the president (for one term) afterall. I flew into "John Wayne Airport" in California not long ago. Although...one could argue that John Wayne was more relevant.

The airport in Liverpool is John Lennon Airport.

I like it but it seems so....lightweight! Like "Suzanne Pleshette Airport".

Naw - It's plenty heavy. Too heavy for Georgia, though.

If you were the mayor of the city, and you knew your constituents didn't want a particular name change to go through, would you still stand there and ram it down their throats anyway? That doesn't sound like a good strategy if you intend to be re-elected (or, if term limits prevent that, then keeping your party in power). Because, let's face it, in the 2009 version of America, many people pay little or no attention to real issues...but they get all worked up over inconsequential things--who just got kicked off "American Idol" and renaming an airport come to mind.

Can you imaging the delays at that airport? What with waiting in line for fuel and everything...

Oh my, wonder if the airport will end up like Carter left out country? flat broke and in deep trouble.

He is a disgrace to he Presidency and of course the second worst President in history.

If the moron reagan gets airports named after him, surely Carter, who was a far greater President, can have one too.

Houston beat them to it (naming their airport after a president)
