Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell believes in ending the death penalty, conserving water and reforming government — but he doesn't believe in God. His political opponents say that's a sin that makes him unworthy of serving in office, and they've got the North Carolina Constitution on their side.

Does that mean no Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist or Shintoist could hold public office either since none of those believe in a single god either? If so, that seems almost like those countries where no religion but their own is recognised and other faiths or belief systems are banned from being practiced.

And it's not just North Carolina. From the news story:

Six other states, Arkansas, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, have similar provisions barring atheist officeholders.

Yes.

It's funny how the religious (Christians, in this case) claim they are so persecuted and disrespected, and yet they are quick to attack someone's lack of faith as a sign of incompetency.

The article points out that the law is unconstitutional and has never been enforced. I suspect the same for other states with similar laws on the books.

Yes, but he's still going to be forced to defend himself. The laws need to be changed.

"But the federal protections don't necessarily spare atheist public officials from spending years defending themselves in court. Avowed atheist Herb Silverman won an eight-year court battle in 1997 when South Carolina's highest court granted him the right to be appointed as a notary despite the state's law."

your question:

Should atheists be banned from holding public office?

If they are going to raise my taxes then yes.

If they are going to lower my taxes then no.
