The district certainly deserves some embarrassment. It should be a big enough story for a nat'l reporter to give it some attention for awhile. Sounds like it's right up Bill O'Rielly's alley. You should email him, with your son's permission, of course.

I'd love to be one of those students.

I just got an email informing me of another Union County Teacher arrested in 2001 for sexual misconduct with teens.
The district spokesperson said the following in response to this district's background check protocols:Note, the misdemeanors being referred to at the beginning of this section of an article refer to this man being arrested for possession of alcohol.

"Luan Ingram, a spokeswoman with the Union County school system, said because the charges are misdemeanors Harvey was not automatically disqualified from employment.

Ingram said he was "honest about the charges and his references checked out." A private company, the Chatman Corporation, conducts background checks on all employees in the states where the applicant has lived or worked.

When asked, Ingram said the process would not detect out-of-state felonies committed while on vacation in another state, for example. She said officials use the company because it completes the background checks within 24 hours to a week. The turnaround is critical because of a shortage of teachers, she added. "We've never had a problem, and we still have confidence in the process," Ingram said.

Many large school systems in the state, like Charlotte-Mecklenburg, conduct national background checks using the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, which often takes several months."

I guess if you don't place a priority on background checks, and are willing to hire a teacher in a 24 hour period, you are going to continue to hire trash.
I wonder if the district has seen the error of its ways, and has changed its methods. I will inquire.

Charlotte Observer | 06/17/2007 | Letters to the Editor (http://www.charlotte.com/union/story/163059.html - broken link)

Union's schools need good housecleaning

The parents of students in Union County Schools deserve answers to the following questions. What is the status of the four Union County Schools teachers who have charges pending for having inappropriate sexual conduct with students? Did the district comply with the law in the timely reporting of all such incidents? Did adults have knowledge of any of these episodes, and adhere to a code of silence, at the expense of our children? Did any of these adults cross county or state lines and get hired in other districts, only to pose a risk to other children's safety? Are there other adults and children involved who have not yet been identified? What steps are we taking as a community to find out the truth?Until this district opens its eyes and focuses itself on the gross misconduct on the part of the adults in this system, we will continue to have problems of this magnitude. It is time for a bit of housecleaning. Taking a broom and sweeping things under the rug does not count. Our children are at risk.

/sigh poor Freddy; he was taken through the ringer on this one. I was friends with Freddy during the time of this... yes he went to the beach... no he didn’t get anyone drunk... no he didn’t have sex with anyone. Want to know what happened? The student that started all of this begged Freddy to date her. He said no, but she was persistent and after repeated refusals to her advances she went to the school resource officer claiming that he had sex with her and refused to call her afterwards. The court finally threw this out after they discovered the girl was lying. It’s nice to see how many people will hear a story and turn into jackals immediately. Shame on all of you who thought of this poor man as scum. He was vindicated, but still his life has been changed forever.Ah the south and its judgmental Christians. See you all in hell you hypocritical bastards.

Two Bountiful Jr. High teachers accused of sex with same student - Salt Lake Tribune
The big list: Female teachers with students
The second link shows over 150 female teachers who had sex with their students. Could not find a list of male teachers. Wonder why the press isn't covering this sex scandal the way they did the priest sex scandal?
