I am generally a defender of Port St. Lucie schools. I went to PSL public schools from Second grade through high school, and do more than fine for myself. Things may be different now, but I can't imagine much more so. The state grades the St. Lucie County school district as a "B" overall, which is not bad considering the "overall" grade includes a lot of Ft. Pierce schools where the students do not test well due to socioeconomic considerations better suited for a different thread.
I would suggest anyone looking into public schools visit the "Great Schools" website:

If your kid is stupid, they're going to be stupid even in a "good" school. If your kid is smart, they will go far in any school, and no parent should rely on the "school" for your child's educational upbringing anyway.

One of my relatives resides in Port St. Lucie, and she says that around her house, there are many empty lots. There are also many homes that have been in foreclosure. She also mentioned that good paying jobs are non-existent. Unless you decide to work for Wal-Greens or Publix. On the positive side, she says that it is well better than South Florida. The residents of Port St. Lucie are more friendly and there is less crime.

Port St. Lucie has always had a lot of vacant lots. It's why home prices are cheaper compared to other parts of the state. Years ago you could be the only house on the street.
When the real estate boom came in, speculators raped the city's treed lots and put lots of spec houses up for unrealistic prices. Lots of foreclosures are the result, but for others, now is a goldmine to buy, with lots of options.
Jobs have always been an issue for PSL, which is more of a bedroom community for West Palm Beach than anything else at this point (at least until the 2010 census when the 50% jump in population since 2000 shows up on marketing reports and surveys for businesses). Nonetheless, the median income for households in PSL is on par or actually a bit higher with the rest of Florida according to City-Data:

LOL, there are jobs you just have to know where to look and lots of times you have to know someone. I've worked out of a Fort Pierce office for the past 7 years. I live in NC but still have a "florida" job.

Empty lots are indicative of a young community - which is what PSL is. While I agree that PSL is "bedroom" community. The job opportunities and industry are building every day - despite the current economy.
PSL is like most of America - Life is what you make it.

Hmmm...either you are very young or have not been to Port St Lucie in years. CBS houses out number "stick" houses by alot and by plazas do you mean a shopping center? Yes we have shopping. Didn't realize that shopping was a bad thing.
We have loads of shopping now including outdoor malls and a research center and another mall going up and the HGTV green house is being built here, we have 2 well known master planned communities, a PGA learning center and museum, a fun entertainment district, amazing beaches, a Club Med, a gorgeous natural river and one of only 2 lagoons in the country that has species you will only find in those 2 locales. Did I mention that Florida schools now rank in the top 10 in the country?

I believe the school academic system in Saint Lucie is moving upward in the nationwide school ranking system and if you view cable channel 20 you will notice how everyone is doing their best to improve a once substandard system.

We have loads of shopping now including outdoor malls and a research center and another mall going up and the HGTV green house is being built here, we have 2 well known master planned communities, a PGA learning center and museum, a fun entertainment district, amazing beaches, a Club Med, a gorgeous natural river and one of only 2 lagoons in the country that has species you will only find in those 2 locales.
