I used the word negro to match the terminology of the original poster.

So he did you that term, my apologies to you.

But seriously, I've never seen a photograph of early Portland with any such signs. If you've seen one ... I'd be interested in knowing about it.

Not signs, but as noted below, in the Oregon Constitution.

It was a much different state many years ago, definitely much more conservative back then.

Black people have lived in Oregon pretty much since people have lived in Oregon. Heck, York came with Lewis & Clark. Certainly not in large numbers, but they weren't not allowed. Sure, there were some despicable instances of discrimination ... look up Nathaniel Ford for an awful example.

However, I didn't say discrimination didn't exist in Oregon (or for that matter, stupid laws that were never really enforced). Of course it did. It still does. Against all kinds of people. Native people, blacks, Irish, Germans, Italians, Catholics, Hawaiians, Chinese, Japanese, Gays, the Elderly ... you name it.

I just don't get the impression that it ever was as pervasive, and as "in your face" as it was in the south. I didn't live through those times, so I have no first-hand knowledge. Oregon history is my thing, so I'm not unfamiliar with it.

Did you even read the article? Like the part where only one man was ever excluded by law.

I'm not going to argue with a New Jersey native.

Who's the Jersey Native that you are not going to argue with? And what does that have to do with my comment?
