It looks like every other street downtown is now close to traffic?

I think some consider the slow stoplight timing of downtown Portland a plus to discourage thru-traffic and be more pedestrian friendly.

Not sure why Portland would want to shut down traffic to that many streets to achieve 25mph through downtown. Downtown is only about a mile wide and two miles long. If you want to get through downtown faster, take the 405 and you will easily bypass downtown.

The major benefit to pedestrians is that half the streets in downtown would be free of vehicles. The benefit to drivers is that the remaining roads would be timed for 25 mph (as opposed to the current 12.5 mph) and commute times through downtown would be reduced.

Instead of doubling the speed the lights are timed for, the cycle length could double so that the lights are still timed at 12.5 mph (if that's what the city really wanted). Or the city could pick a cycle length to achieve a desired speed.

12.5 mph = 112 second cycle
15.0 mph = 95 second cycle
17.5 mph = 81 second cycle
20.0 mph = 71 second cycle
25.0 mph = 56 second cycle

I am curious, are you in Portland or anything? I have driven in downtown Portland many times and never felt the need for the speed limit to be 25mph when you move through downtown pretty easy whenever going anywhere.

Ridiculous idea. Store owners wouldn't like it. Drivers wouldn't like it. Pedestrians, maybe .... except for the cars speeding through downtown.

Nope. Doesn't benefit anyone.

But it is cute the way you (or whoever) put only about a quarter the number of cars in the second video.

Store owners may like it if it leads to more foot traffic.

Drivers may like it if it shortens their daily commute times.

You should watch Brain Games sometime! Your mind has tricked you.
If you want to shorten a commute time there are other routes one can take in Portland rather than driving through downtown. Plus driving through downtown doesn't take that long.

Prove it. First, there are "autos" on only half as many streets, and secondly, they're much more spaced out than on the first one. The first one, is traffic on every street, bumper to bumper. The second one, on only half the streets (gaining only the "intersection" space).
