I am from CA and moved to PDX, NE neighborhood, about ten months ago. Most of my kid's class has parents who are transplants and at least half are from CA. I have had no problems living here and have found that Locals and Transplants can be either very friendly or aloof. I wouldn't say all Transplants are kinder than Locals. Just met one of the nicest moms ever in the school hallway and she is born and brought up in PDX. I am from S.F., though, so I don't expect the welcome wagon wherever I live. My family drives one car really, which is a SUV and we are in good company. Don't believe the hype about Portland being Communist and so far left- wing that it affects your day to day living. Most people could care less what you do so long as you don't hurt anybody or talk too much about religion. I love it here. It's not for everybody, though.

My wife is an Air Force veteran, we moved here from California and we live happily in the Portland suburbs. Never had a hint of a problem with either the California or Air Force background.

No, not really. My friends who were born here don't hate Californians but they blame them for a lot of Oregon's ills. When I first moved here in the 70's there were actual demonstrations of negative feelings regarding Californians. I worked with a few people from Cali who told stories of being treated badly or being scorned because of where they were from.

I experienced some of that and I am a Chicago transplant.

Things are different today though, I think some "natives" still resent outsiders especially Californians but since there are so many transplants, there is less overt hostililty.

Ha Ha! I've heard this from Denver, to LA (Hating people transplanting from Denver) and now I hear about it there too...Even people in Key West talked about all the damn east coasters taking the land up...

It's never going to stop! But if you see my CALI plates...remember I'm from Indiana, and I hold the door open for people...don't key my car!

This is a long thread! I'm thinking of moving to Oregon from California, but I feel like I'm not your typical Southern Californian. I feel like I will fit in better in Oregon. I'll be driving a car with CA plates though. I hope people will give me the benefit of the doubt.

{cough, cough}
Well, ahem, er,
Maybe you should think about getting your car licensed in Oregon.
Think about it **real** hard now, why don't you?

Ain't nothing WRONG with leaving your Cali plates on your car, mind you....
but since you have to legally get an Oregon driver's license and you will need to renew you car insurance to the cheaper Portland car insurance rates... Why not go ahead and change your plates over....

Just think of as Portlanders are merely encouraging you to license your car in Oregon. Yeah, that's it--- we want you to adapt to being one of us, ...yeah, that's the ticket... the shouting you will hear is merely to remind you to ah, .....ah, ...shed(?) your California identity and become an Oregonian.
