Now if it involved disease, or perhaps a professional/academic issue where one just can't get it right over the course of years and resources utilized.
After that tenth, or maybe even twentieth year of being stuck in remedial studies.
Perhaps someone doesn't wish to live on any longer knowing that they'll be stuck earning meager wages and limited to "dirty work" for the rest of their natural lives.
Deep down inside they know they can't perform that sort of work forever and any money saved up for retirement might not be enough to even carry them through for very long after.
If the mutual decision is made by the person that they don't want to end up becoming a public burden, then they've got every right to drop their own hammer.
Some of us find other reasons to press on slightly despite the odds, the rest should be able to take that needed exit when they're finally "out of fuel".
