Yes and no. As an owner you can benefit from equity or increase in property values should you sell; or suffer from decreases, real estate bubbles, and costly home repairs.

As an owner you're not subject to the same restrictions on what you can do to your home as you do with a landlord. No homeowner has to ask the bank permission for anything once the sale is finalized.

This is probably the one and only best reason to own a home. Financially I don't see any benefits to owning a home unless you pay for it in cash without taking out a mortgage. The reason I say this is because several years back I did a calculation comparing your net worth if you rent for around 30-40 years compared to buying a home and taking a mortgage. It turned out your net worth ends up being the same in both cases. The only difference is where your money is at: in the one case it's in cash in the bank, in the other case it's the equity in your home.

When we rented, I felt the same. I wouldn't put one nail or screw in the wall. You can buy those strips that stick to walls and come off without peeling the paint. They hold pictures and stuff. Google it and you will see. They sell them in hardware stores and walmart.

As for the parents, they are being unreasonable. Sure, parents never want their kids to go too far but you cnNnot live for them. When they die, you would have rented for 20 years and still have nothing. Can't you move one state away like Vegas? I just know it is selfish for them to interfere. Their job was to raise you until you were an adult. Then you fly away, like a bird. You are adult now. If you have the opportunity to pick up and move to another state that you feel comfortable enough to call home, do it or you will regret it and resent them.
