Why do some full-time residents put up shutters at the beginning of hurricane season? It only takes a couple of hours (at the very most) to put them up, and we get days of warning that a storm may be coming. My neighbor has his up on every window. His house is pitch black all summer! Who would want to live like that for 6 months?? To each his own, I know, but it seems very strange...

I don't have a clue why they do it. We won't put ours up until there is a good possiblity of a storm coming and not until then. The news was saying that it is a real hazard to leave them up all summer. If you have a fire, the smoke won't come out to alert people, the firemen will have a harder time getting in and you may block your only access to escape. It really does make sense.

I wonder if they do it to keep the AC bill down? Every house in Germany has a light-duty version of hurricane shutters, either electric or strap/pulley actuated from inside. Obviously no hurricanes in Germany - they keep the heat in in the winter, and out in the summer, and are very effective. Clearly not such a good idea when they're bolted on from the outside.

Excellent guide, RC. Thanks for posting. I guess this solves my question about lift vs. trailer during the storm. Many will benefit from this informative guide. Thanks again.

As far as the shutters go, maybe they are elder folk and their son or daughter comes down and puts them up for them. Otherwise, I have NO idea why! If nobody is living in the house, yes I see it except it's a great place for the 'widows' and other creatures! YUK! I wouldn't want to be the one to take them down.

Good to know since I'll be taking mine down for the first time soon. I expect to run into bees but haven't really thought about nasty spiders or other bad critters. Guess I'll have a canister of chemicals handy!

I've put mine up a couple times - for a month or so when I left during the summer. I haven't had much of a problem with nasty bugs. Some of the lizards take up residence there, and have eaten them all - I've seen signs of that. If I did that up north - there would be tons of spiders.

We have a constant battle with Black and Brown Widow spiders. I use the Bengal spray now and monitoring. If you see a web that looks like the spider was on crack, it probably is a widow. I embrace an orb web anymore. I even had to spray under the car as they were taking up residence.
