How bad are the crime rates in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda? The areas shown in red are higher crime areas, green, lower crime areas. The areas near the bay in Port Charlotte are much closer to the red areas than in Punta Gorda. What's your perspective of the areas to avoid in the Port Charlotte / Punta Gorda area? We plan to visit the area in person in a couple months to explore the area as a possible future retirement or snowbirding location.

By and large, I would say there is less crime in Punta Gorda than Port Charlotte. But both places are pretty safe. I would be glad to give more advice if you PM me. Punta Gorda has the more upscale Punta Gorda Isles and also some other areas with less expensive homes, but still wonderful neighborhoods.

I would check the areas in person. Sometimes crime stats can be a bit misleading. Perfect example is/was a dispute over some jewelry amongst a deceased persons family in my areas development came up in crime stats as a Burglary and Theft. So someone that just looks at stats would look and think oh that's a bad area.

Default Moving with children

If you have kids you also need to check the sex offender sites. I would check even if you don't have kids.

Davephan you might even call the PG police dep't and speak to a community affairs officer. Ask away, they're very responsive. So is the police chief.

(I did exactly that long before we considered the area.)

As for crime, based on the amount of times we've been there and what we've seen (including driving around or walking in late hours), and in talking with many locals, like any city there are good and not so great parts. Overall, based on our experience, I'd have exactly zero worries about crime in PG being a deterrent to considering living there full time or owning a 2nd home.

I can't speak to Port Charlotte, however. Don't know anything about it other than passing through.

the red areas appear to be the older more depressed sections of PC.

The worst area in PC is east of 41 off Easy Street. You can drive the. Neighborhood, see homes that are not well maintained, and has higher levels of crime, primarily drug related.

IMO, stay west of 41, south end of PC below Harbor View, and north of Midway.

Ou big crime wave where we live west of 41 was when the neighbor's bike got stole a few years ago.

How about crime in the Deep Creek area in Port Charlotte? (I know the address is Punta Gorda, but it is really in Port Charlotte.)

Crime stats can be found on the Charlotte County Sheriffs Office Web site. Crime Statistics

Click on the Crime Map tab.
Type in an address you might be interested in.
Click the Incident layers and check the boxes you want. It also includes sex offenders.
Then click search.

You can zoom in and out of any address and the surrounding neighborhoods.
If you click on the icon in the area, whether it be T for Theft or Q for Quality of Life, etc. then it will give you the date of the incident and the description.

I could be doing something wrong, but I don't think so. That map shows pretty much zero crime. I zoomed around PC and PG areas and didn't find much of anything shown - and I had all layers turned on.
