I use the FL Museum of Natural History's ID a FL snake website when I find those critters (snakes) in my yard.

Oh wow.

The snake is NOT a python...NOT a water snake...and especially NOT an 'immature black racer"...as the Peace River Wildlife stated that it is!

This all gets me mad as hell. A wildlife center identifying something and being so ridiculously wrong? What sort of unqualified person has THAT job?

It is a rat snake. Period. It is a wonderful, friendly and beneficial rat snake.

Likely yellow rat snake...but technically it could have traits of Everglades as well. Pantherophis...previously known as Elaphe.

Sure looks like a southern black racer to me !! Of course, I am not an expert in Herpetology. I avoid all snakes, just to be safe.

Okay, but it is not a southern black racer. So very many differences.

Well, what can I say? It isn't a racer at all.

It is 100% positively a young Yellow Rat Snake.

I do know my stuff very well.

The two snakes, as immatures, are often confused...but it is easy to see the stark differences once you learn them.

Your snake is a beauty.

Here is a very helpful link to show you and others. See your Yellow Rat Snake and then, in the following photo, see it as a young one...which is what you show in your original post.

Thanks for posting! Very interesting!

Rat snake, corn snake, racer.... Whatever. It's not harmful to us, so no big deal. I like to have them around the yard. I much rather have them than some rats, mice, or other little vermin.

I think learning is better than 'whatever'. Learning is good and much needed these days.

I'd say you're right but, what is it you see that makes you so certain?
