Firehouse was not good at all when I tried it. When someone posts they are looking for a good sub is most likely will not be found in a chain. The OP is looking for the hidden/secret sub shop with that killer sub. I have been looking and I have not found it up here yet in the triangle. It like saying the subs from Subway taste good...lol!!

Yeah Firehouse is not a good choice. Thier whole premise makes no sense - something about "created by firemen". I tend to think of firemen as experts in FIRE, not subs. I would rate firehouse above Subway but way below Jersey Mikes and Quizno's.
A local chain with decent to good subs is Rudino's. They are made on fresh bread and toasted in the pizza oven. I think I've only had their Italian sub but it was pretty good.
And if you're ever in Holly Springs, you could give Fat Philly's a try. Local subshop with great cheese steaks (and order the fresh cut chips...EXCELLENT)
My #1 sub shop is Cheerz Deli in RTP behind the Sheetz on Miami and TW Alexander
(2945 S Miami Blvd # 106, Durham, NC)
It's run by J.J. and his wife, open for breakfast and lunch. While you're open to get what you want, I suggest trying The Death Wish, The Carolina Crusher, and my all time favorite J.J. Special. The J.J. special isn't on the menu, and it's something you order when you just trust him... because really it's just whatever he feels like putting on bread.
Also, if you have any interest in Bahn Mi... There is a little place next door called N9N, it's not on the menu, it's $2.50 or $3.00 per, and pretty tasty.
Don't be jealous that I've known about these places for years, just be thankful I'm sharing the wealth!
The deli at most Harris Teeter's makes pretty decent made-to-order subs, too. Most of them load up the meat and some stores have a toaster, too. Try it out... you can't beat the price when you get the $2.99 half special which usually has more meat/cheese than the "$5 footlongs" from subway.
