Yeah, but I don't think the red light cameras necessarily do anything to prevent that from happening. They punish people after the fact.
Anyway, here's the article I was referring to: http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/11101320/

Um, how can you punish people BEFORE the fact? Would you prefer people got tickets for something they were going to do in the future? If people know there is a camera at a certain intersection don't you think they will avoid running it in the future? That seems preventive to me.
According to these articles, Cary only gets 12% of the revenues from fines and city officials are beginning to wonder if the program is worth the trouble. Apparently, drivers have been getting tickets due to system malfunctions.
My GPS has been warning us of red light cameras all over Cary, but my husband and I have been noticing that they're all covered up. So I'm curious, what's the deal with them? Are they coming or going?

They're going. Town of Cary discontinued the use of the Red Light Cameras last month I believe.
I read a few weeks ago that the Town of Cary voted to discontinue their contract with the company that was providing and operating the cameras.
That is to say, they didn't end them immediately, they just voted to not extend the contract, which had a few weeks to go at that time.
I'm guessing that the contract has finally run out, and the company is now probably going to be taking them out to use somewhere else.
If you need any proof that red-light cameras are no longer in service, just have a seat on one of the four corners of the Cary Parkway-High House Road intersection. In rush-hour traffic.
Better yet, Mellow Mushroom has a wonderful observation space...have a drink, some good eats, and sit back to watch the chaos ensue!
