Wow, thanks! I've been thinking about this recently and was planning for the future, but after doing the taxes this year and then hearing about the Progress Energy incentives going away I'm thinking we might want to actually run some numbers.
My biggest problem is we have gas everything. We'd have to not only install the panels, but update our hot water and gas heat to electric. They are both older, but still work well. I'd probably keep the gas range. I like cooking on gas.

You don't have to update everything to electric. I'm not sure that's worth it. LNG is going down in cost and will do so for the foreseeable future. You just install a PV array that is only big enough to cover your usage and nothing more. Gas is actually helpful for big appliances only because it won't cause big spikes in power usage during peak hours and will keep your peak demand charge low.
The incentives for Progress are getting cut in half (for the initial rebate check) but not changing for the monthly bill credit or Sun Sense rate program.
The incentives for federal and NC tax credits are slated to last at least through 2015:

You're welcome - that was the goal. If all of us offset some of our power with solar, we'd all not only save money but also keep the grid from overloading too. The tax incentives surely don't hurt, and the payback is very fast.
My last power bill was $9.03. That was my first full month with both systems running, albeit with a defective inverter that drops out randomly during high sun. Without that I could have been a lot closer to zero. They're replacing it with a properly working model today (finally) after almost 2 months that the system has been installed.
New milestone reached at 10:25am today - my last 30 days summary hit net zero usage for the first time ever. It's still climbing so I'll have a nice buffer by the end of the day.
Wow that's awesome. I imagine you'll get some nice surpluses the next few months. More clear skies, longer days and temperate weather.
