Allen and Sons (Chapel Hill, not Pittsboro) is probably the best in the area IMO, but if that is too far for OP (I understand, with the kids and all), then local options. I think Old Time BBQ near the fairgrounds is probably closest. Not my favorite, but pretty decent.
My real reason for posting though, has anyone been to the new location of Clyde Coopers? If it's any good, then you could spend a day in DT Raleigh, visit some museums, or the old capitol, or just walking around, and then have some Que in walking distance.
Other places mentioned:
Danny's - Bleh
Smokeys - Good place, but not known for NC Style, if that's what you're after
Backyard - Decent, but if you got that far, go to Allan and Sons. (FWIW, best Mac-n-cheese on the planet)
The Pit - Gonna bee too expensive for a big group. (Pretty good que, but I'm in the camp of not liking the vibe)
Smithfields - Fast food, but some of the other places listed are worse
I have yet to try City. It's getting good reviews, so I know I need to get over my prejudices, so far I just can't get motivated.
Whatever you do, enjoy, and let us know your thoughts.
(Have you thought about where to take them for Pizza?)
I walked around Regency Lake this morning. The smell was wonderful.
I went to the one a couple years back. The admission price covered beer and bourbon, but not BBQ. Be sure to take $ for that.
I seriously had the best BBQ and ribs I've had to date at The Pit in Durham. Simply amazing.
I think people dismiss the Pit (Raleigh & Durham) because it might come across as a "high end" or "gourmet" BBQ Restaurant... Get over yourselves because it really is good stuff.
I've grown to like vinegar based a lot, although I was bred on chopped, tomato based. The Lexington.
I love the passion that BBQ brings out! I can smoke a mighty good pulled pork if I do say so myself and generally that's what I would opt for. But we're still settling in and I'm not even sure what box my gear is stashed in at the moment and frankly, I don't think I have the energy to pull it off. We used to live in Raleigh a long time ago, so my dad is certainly familiar with good NC BBQ. We don't have a car big enough to fit my parents, wife and kids (still in car seats) so I'm trying to find something close enough that we're not spending too much time driving. I will definitely keep some of the farther recommendations in mind for the future.
I agree and disagree with some of the comments here but after hearing this from you ride up 55 to Barkyard BBQ.
BTW- I like Danny's Q and it is cooked over wood. I am a weber guy cooking and slicing rubbed butts cooked over lump.

This describes me perfectly. I always refused to go there for the reasons you state. Went there once on a business dinner and the que was indeed awesome. I'd go back again if friends or business wanted to, but I have to admit, if spending my own money and if given the choice, I'd still take an unassuming shack, good sweet tea, and less pretense. (But I no longer "refuse" to go to the Pit.)

Lot of words, just to say "I agree"
I'm glad the preconceptions were left by the wayside!

The Pit is good. I think that it's common for people to give the side eye to places that are more "upscale" that serve BBQ. Maybe it's not the perfect location, but doesn't mean the food isn't good.

I will second the heck out of this. Pork beef and chicken and different sauces are available.
I think we will try here some time while my mom is here.
